Tujuan syarahan pengukuhan ini adalah untuk membicangkan tentang budaya Melayu yang menjadi garis panduan dalam berkomunikasi. Komunikasi merupakan satu proses pertukaran mesej sama ada secara lisan dan bukan lisan yang berlaku antara sumber dan penerima. Fungsi komunikasi dalam sesebuah masyarakat dan organisasi adalah untuk menyalurkan maklumat, mendidik, menghibur dan sebagainya bagi memastikan kelangsungan masyarakat atau organisasi berkenaan. Bertitik tolak daripada tesis yang menghujahkan bahawa komunikasi dipengaruhi oleh budaya yang diamalkan dalam masyarakat, perbincangan seterusnya menjurus kepada elemen-elemen budaya yang menjadi garis panduan anggota masyarakat dalam berinteraksi. Antaranya ialah peribahasa, agama, pantun, nilai hormat-menghormati, adab sopan, menjaga maruah, dan sebagainya. Nilai-nilai ini diwarisi dari satu generasi ke satu generasi dan merupakan imej dan identiti kepada anggota masyarakat berkenaan. Masyarakat Melayu dikatakan merupakan masyarakat yang mementingkan kesopanan dan berbudi pekerti dalam berkomunikasi. Bagi tujuan memperkukuhkan lagi tesis tentang perkaitan antara komunikasi dan budaya, penulis membincangkan dua teori asas kepada hubungan ini iaitu Teori Konstruksi Sosial dan Teori Pengaruh Sosial. Berlandaskan kepada kesemua aspek yang dibincangkan, pengkaji seterusnya mengemukakan usaha-usaha penelitian empirikal yang dilakukan oleh beliau dan hasil daripada penelitian yang berupa pembentukan instrumen komunikasi dalam konteks masyarakat Melayu dan pembinaan model komunikasi yang menyepadukan unsur budaya sebagai satu sintesis. Namun begitu, sejajar dengan perubahan masa, penciptaan teknologi komunikasi maklumat terutamanya media sosial sedikit sebanyak telah membawa kesan yang positif dan negative kepada komunikasi yang berteraskan budaya ini. Ini menjadi satu antitesis yang membuka lebih banyak ruang dan peluang kepada ahli akademik untuk melakukan penelitian, sumbangan dan khidmat bakti bagi membantu anggota masyarakat untuk bertindak balas terhadap perkembangan teknologi dan mempertahankan nilai tradisi daripada kepupusan.
