Il desiderio di felicità sembra essere un tratto congenito alla natura umana: è comune a ogni epoca e a tutte le culture. Ma se le parole ci permettono di comunicare e di comprenderci, sono al tempo stesso fonte di malintesi. La parola «felicità», infatti, nasconde una trappola semantica. Da un lato ha avuto per lungo tempo – dagli antichi greci al Medioevo e alla prima modernità – un connotato etico: di armonia civile, indissolubilmente legata alla sfera pubblica e al buon governo, o di beatitudine spirituale, inscindibile dal divino e dal sacro. Dall’altro lato, prima con la Rivoluzione francese e poi con l’emergere del liberalismo, la felicità diviene invece un obiettivo dell’individuo, materiale e «quantificabile» attraverso merci e denaro: qualcosa, dunque, di neutro dal punto di vista etico. La felicità moderna ha quindi sempre meno a che fare con una vita «buona» – in armonia con gli altri, con se stessi e con il proprio ambiente. Si identifica invece sempre più con il guadagno e la ricchezza. A questa «felicità» deviante e in ultima analisi tossica, scrive Latouche in queste pagine, è oggi indispensabile contrapporre una frugalità sobria e serena, un’autolimitazione conviviale e gioiosa, veicolata, in maniera decisiva, dal nostro rapporto con il cibo e con l’alimentazione. Contro gli eccessi dell’iperconsumo e dello spreco promossi dall’agricoltura produttivista e dalla grande distribuzione, ma anche contro il cibo spazzatura tipico dell’alimentazione globalizzata che con essa va di pari passo, Latouche sostiene il ritorno a un’agricoltura rispettosa del suolo e della vita, alle gastronomie tradizionali – legate agli ingredienti locali – e a una fruizione del cibo integrata, in armonia con l’ambiente circostante. L’obesità, la fame, la malnutrizione, le carestie raccontano infatti una stessa contraddizione: quella di una società intossicata dalla crescita e che sta fagocitando la vita. A tutto ciò è necessario rispondere rallentando, riducendo e ridistribuendo, attraverso la costruzione di una società dell’abbondanza che sia al contempo felice e frugale.

«Decrescita»: che cosa si intende esattamente con questa parola? Un’inversione della curva di crescita del prodotto interno lordo, indice statistico che dovrebbe misurare la ricchezza? La fine dell’ideologia della crescita, ovvero del produttivismo? Se la crescita è una fede nel progresso, allora la decrescita può sembrare la cifra di una perdita. Serge Latouche ci spiega che non è così. Mentre l’idea di una crescita infinita è negata in modo sempre più evidente dai limiti del pianeta, il mito della ricchezza e della produttività svela ogni giorno di più il suo lato oscuro. È infatti sempre più probabile che, al di là di una certa soglia, l’aumento del PIL implichi una diminuzione del benessere. Nella società della produttività illimitata non aumentano solo le disuguaglianze, anche la felicità promessa ai «vincenti» si rivela un’illusione. All’aumento dei consumi corrisponde il degrado della qualità della vita (l’acqua, l’aria, l’ambiente), il ricorso sempre maggiore a strategie di compensazione (medicine per lo stress e altre patologie, i viaggi, lo svago), l’aumento dei prezzi di beni essenziali ogni giorno più scarsi (acqua, energia, spazi verdi). La soluzione per Latouche è la decrescita. Che significa rompere con la società della crescita, con l’economia capitalistica, con il produttivismo e con l’occidentalizzazione del mondo. Ma anche recupero di quanto in questi anni è andato perduto: un senso del sacro che restituisca legittimità alla dimensione spirituale dell’uomo, in forme anche completamente laiche. La decrescita come arte di vivere. Un’arte sobria e dalle forme variegate, di volta in volta da inventare e da costruire, un’arte, soprattutto, volta a vivere bene: in accordo con se stessi e con il mondo.

La crisi sanitaria, il cambiamento climatico e la perdita di biodiversità, ma anche le nuove problematiche emerse con l’introduzione della pratica del telelavoro e l’incidenza sempre maggiore di una vera e propria dipendenza dall’attività lavorativa, sono tutti segnali di una crisi e hanno reso evidente la necessità di un cambio radicale di paradigma. La soluzione sta nella rottura con la logica capitalistica e nella rinuncia al mito della ricchezza e della produttività incontrollata. La risposta è la decrescita, l’unica che ci permetterebbe di realizzare le tre promesse tradite, comportando al tempo stesso una riduzione quantitativa e una trasformazione qualitativa del lavoro, in una prospettiva di abolizione del rapporto salariale.

Most of us who live in the North and the West consume far too much – too much meat, too much fat, too much sugar, too much salt. We are more likely to put on too much weight than to go hungry. We live in a society that is heading for a crash. We are aware of what is happening and yet we refuse to take it fully into account. Above all we refuse to address the issue that lies at the heart of our problems – namely, the fact that our societies are based on an economy whose only goal is growth for growth’s sake. Serge Latouche argues that we need to rethink from the very foundations the idea that our societies should be based on growth. He offers a radical alternative – a society of ‘de-growth’. De-growth is not the same thing as negative growth. We should be talking about ‘a-growth’, in the sense in which we speak of ‘a-theism’. And we do indeed have to abandon a faith or religion – that of the economy, progress and development—and reject the irrational and quasi-idolatrous cult of growth for growth’s sake. While many realize that that the never-ending pursuit of growth is incompatible with a finite planet, we have yet to come to terms with the implications of this – the need to produce less and consume less. But if we do not change course, we are heading for an ecological and human disaster. There is still time to imagine, quite calmly, a system based upon a different logic, and to plan for a ‘de-growth society’.
