L'architettura tradizionale dell'Abruzzo ha sempre fatto un grande uso della pietra, soprattutto calcarea, dando vita ad una civiltà costruttiva di alto livello, malgrado i gravi danni inferti dai terremoti ricorrenti. Questo lavoro di Anna Di Nucci approfondisce il tema delle tecniche costruttive storiche nell'area appenninica centrale, esaminando il patrimonio di edilizia religiosa della antica diocesi di Valva e Sulmona, in un periodo ampio che va dal pieno Medioevo al Settecento. L'area considerata è collocata in una posizione nodale per gli scambi commerciali e culturali di ogni epoca e presenta una sua netta identità architettonica. Grazie ad una conoscenza capillare del territorio e ad una schedatura analitica di monumenti spesso poco noti o addirittura del tutto ignorati, il volume restituisce tipologie e tecniche costruttive, ma anche la storia edilizia complessiva di una città e del suo circondario. Il lavoro rivela la compresenza di fattori diversi nella costituzione del patrimonio locale: innanzitutto il sapere tecnico ereditato dai popoli italici e dal mondo romano; poi le conoscenze apportate dalle comunità monastiche e degli avvicendamenti dinastici; infine, gli spostamenti di maestranze provenienti dalle varie regioni italiane e da Oltralpe. Emergono così alcune costanti, come la persistenza dell'opera quadrata in pietra, che assume il valore di una continuazione di modi costruttivi antichi, ripresa e variata nelle varie epoche, sempre con una notevole capacità di adattamento alle mutevoli esigenze. Lo studio delle tecniche murarie diviene così parte di una più vasta arte del costruire, con l'obiettivo della sua valorizzazione e trasmissione alle generazioni future. Anna Di Nucci è architetto, specialista in Restauro dei monumenti (2002) e dottore di Ricerca in Conservazione dei Beni Architettonici (XVII ciclo, 2005), presso la Facoltà di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi di Chieti e Pescara, dove svolge attività di ricerca. Ha pubblicato studi e articoli sul patrimonio architettonico abruzzese e in particolare di Sulmona.

Le finiture murarie giocano un ruolo di primaria importanza nella percezione finale dell'architettura medievale, determinando in buona misura i valori cromatici, plastici e chiaroscurali espressi dalle pareti. Deperibilità, trascuratezza, mutamenti di sensibilità estetica hanno determinato nel tempo la perdita di un ricco repertorio di soluzioni tecniche che rimandavano ad una ben definita figuratività della fabbrica, mentre i restauri condotti a partire dal XIX secolo non hanno spesso compreso e saputo difendere soddisfacentemente questo patrimonio materiale fragile e minuto. L'indagine diretta condotta su numerose chiese medievali, particolarmente nel Lazio e in Abruzzo, ha restituito un ampio repertorio di finiture (su pietra e mattoni, giunti di malta, rivestimenti ecc.) ancora in parte conservate, consentendo di ricomporre una panoramica generale che rimanda a specificità territoriali e cronologiche dell'Italia centro-meridionale e di istituire relazioni precise con altri contesti costruttivi, soprattutto centro europei. L'approfondimento su tre interessanti fabbriche dell'Abruzzo interno, infine, nel restituire l'identità storico-artistica e le vicende di trasformazione degli edifici nel tempo, consente di precisare meglio il rapporto fra soluzioni tecniche e scelte architettoniche, evidenziando il significato specifico della ricerca sin qui condotta, le sue difficoltà interpretative, la connessione profonda fra comprensione, giudizio e proposta operativa nel restauro. DONATELLA FIORANI è professore ordinario in Restauro Architettonico. Dopo aver insegnato per dieci anni presso il corso di laurea in Ingegneria edile-architettura dell'Università dell'Aquila, dal novembre 2008 è titolare di cattedra presso la facoltà di Architettura "Valle Giulia", dell'Università "Sapienza" di Roma. Ha progettato e realizzato restauri di edifici storici in centro Italia e ha redatto diversi saggi su temi dell'architettura medievale e sul restauro.

Il patrimonio di una città, di una regione, come di una intera nazione non è fatto solo di grandi monumenti, ma soprattutto dell'architettura dove si vive, si lavora, ci si incontra quotidianamente. Conoscere gli aspetti tecnici e costruttivi dell'edilizia del passato è la condizione prima per la sua conservazione. Per questo, il volume delinea un repertorio di soluzioni tecniche che possa fornire un concreto ausilio nelle pratiche di tutela e valorizzazione dell'edilizia storica dell'Abruzzo, soprattutto nei suoi centri minori, più esposti al rischio di abbandono, all'invadenza dell'abusivismo edilizio o alle minacce di frane e sismi. The Adriatic is ‘the small Mediterranean’ – a sea within a sea, part of the Mediterranean and at the same time detached from it, a largely enclosed sea with stunning coastlines and a long history of commercial, political and cultural exchange. Silent witness to the flow of civilizations, the Adriatic is the meeting point of East and West where many empires had their frontiers and some overlapped. With Italy on one side and the Balkans on the other, the Adriatic is the area where the Latin West became intertwined with the Greek and Ottoman East. This book tells the history of the Adriatic from the first cultures of the Neolithic Age through to the present day. All of the great civilizations and cultures that bordered and crossed the Adriatic are discussed: Ancient Greece and Rome, Byzantium and the Holy Roman Empire, Venice and the Ottomans, Catholicism, Orthodox Christianity and Islam. Byzantium was replaced by Venice, queen of the Adriatic, which reached its zenith at the beginning of the sixteenth century and maintained commercial and military hegemony in its Gulf, sharing the sea with the Turks, the Habsburgs, the Pope and the Spanish vice-kingdom of Naples. It was Napoleon who ended Venice’s reign in 1797. In the nineteenth century, the Austrian Empire prevailed, and Central Europe reached the Mediterranean through the Adriatic. United Italy placed its most symbolic frontier in the eastern Adriatic, clashing with Austria-Hungary in the First World War. The twentieth century was marked by the prolonged conflicts and eventually peace between Yugoslavia, Albania and Italy. Today the Adriatic is a region increasingly integrated into the European Union, experiencing a new era of cooperation following the dramatic collapse of Yugoslavia. Across centuries, this book illustrates the rich cultural and artistic heritage of diverse civilizations as they left their mark on the cities, shores and states of the Adriatic.
