L’Afrique théâtre de guerre, les Africains acteurs de la Grande Guerre... Ce livre ne traite pas seulement de la participation des Africains à la Grande Guerre, même s’il rappelle tout ce que la France a dû aux soldats et aux paysans d’Afrique noire et d’Afrique du Nord dans sa lutte contre l’Allemagne et comment les mémoires contemporaines en ont été profondément marquées. Il démontre surtout que le continent africain fut le théâtre de conflits acharnés provoqués par la conquête des colonies allemandes et l’extraordinaire pugnacité des Allemands dans la défense de leurs possessions, Togo, Cameroun, et surtout Afrique de l’Est et Afrique du Sud Ouest ; ainsi leur héros en Afrique de l’Est, Paul-Emil Lettow-Vorbeck, réussi-t-il à tenir tête à des forces alliées dix fois supérieures, jusqu’au 25 novembre 1918. Il montre aussi comment la Grande Guerre représenta un tournant majeur dans l’histoire contemporaine de l’Afrique ; elle fait apparaître là, en Afrique du Nord, les premiers éléments des nationalismes ultérieurs, ailleurs en Afrique du Sud, elle enracine la ségrégation ; ailleurs encore, elle fait naître une prise de conscience raciale de la condition noire dont le Premier Congrès panafricain à Paris en 1919 est l’expression la plus spectaculaire. Au total, le livre couvre les différentes façons dont toute l’Afrique s’est trouvée prise au piège de l’engrenage de la guerre. Marc Michel est professeur émérite à l’Université de Provence, membre de l’Institut d’études africaines de cette Université. Il a enseigné plusieurs années en Afrique, puis à l’Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne et à l’Université de Clermont-Ferrand II. Il est l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages sur l’histoire de l’Afrique, l’histoire coloniale et la décolonisation. Following tirailleurs sénégalais’ deployments in West Africa, Congo, Madagascar, North Africa, Syria-Lebanon, Vietnam, and Algeria from the 1880s to 1962, Militarizing Marriage historicizes how African servicemen advanced conjugal strategies with women at home and abroad. Sarah J. Zimmerman examines the evolution of women’s conjugal relationships with West African colonial soldiers to show how the sexuality, gender, and exploitation of women were fundamental to the violent colonial expansion and the everyday operation of colonial rule in modern French Empire. These conjugal behaviors became military marital traditions that normalized the intimate manifestation of colonial power in social reproduction across the empire. Soldiers’ cross-colonial and interracial households formed at the intersection of race and sexuality outside the colonizer/colonized binary. Militarizing Marriage uses contemporary feminist scholarship on militarism and violence to portray how the subjugation of women was indispensable to military conquest and colonial rule.

The heroes of the British and French empires stood at the vanguard of the vibrant cultures of imperialism that emerged in Europe in the second-half of the nineteenth century. Their stories are well known. Scholars have tended to assume that figures such as Livingstone and Gordon, or Marchand and Brazza, vanished rapidly at the end of empire. Yet imperial heroes did not disappear after 1945, as British and French flags were lowered around the world. On the contrary, their reputations underwent a variety of metamorphoses in both the former metropoles and the former colonies. This book develops a framework to understand the complex legacies of decolonisation, both political and cultural, through the case study of imperial heroes. We demonstrate that the ‘decolonisation’ of imperial heroes was a much more complex and protracted process than the political retreat from empire, and that it is still an ongoing phenomenon, even half a century after the world has ceased to be ‘painted in red’. Whilst Decolonising Imperial Heroes explores the appeal of the explorers, humanitarians and missionaries whose stories could be told without reference to violence against colonized peoples, it also analyses the persistence of imperial heroes as sites of political dispute in the former metropoles. Demonstrating that the work of remembrance was increasingly carried out by diverse, fragmented groups of non-state actors, in a process we call ‘the privatisation of heroes’, the book reveals the surprising rejuvenation of imperial heroes in former colonies, both in nation-building narratives and as heritage sites. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History.

Dans le malheur de la guerre, ces sacrifiés ne le furent ni plus ni moins que leurs frères d’armes, les fantassins de la métropole. Néanmoins, leur sacrifice constitue encore aujourd’hui un élément très sensible des relations entre la France et l’Afrique. La « cristallisation » des pensions, autrement dit le gel de la dette contractée par la métropole, reste au cœur du contentieux. C’est l’histoire de cet engagement des Africains au service de la France que retrace d’abord ce livre. La participation des Africains à la Grande Guerre ne se borne pas à cet impôt du sang. Profondément secouée par une série de catastrophes, sécheresse, épidémies, disette et famine, l’Afrique occidentale française est d’abord confrontée à une crise brutale provoquée par l’entrée en guerre ; puis elle est soumise à un effort de production sans précédent en direction de la métropole. La sortie du conflit ne s’effectue pourtant pas dans le désastre et les révoltes généralisées ; Blaise Diagne, seul Noir « médiatique » à l’époque, réussit même à mener à bien un tout dernier recrutement, au-delà de toute espérance. Mais, comme le montre ce livre, une AOF nouvelle émerge où s’enracinent des germes de protestations modernes. Enfin, la Grande Guerre a modifié de façon plutôt positive les regards réciproques entre Africains et Français ; mais elle a aussi ouvert la voie à un infâme réquisitoire de « la Honte Noire » (« die schwarze Schande », récupéré dans l’arsenal du racisme hitlérien. C’est aussi la genèse d’un imaginaire empoisonné que veut éclairer ce livre. L’auteur, Marc Michel, est professeur émérite à l’Université de Provence, membre de l’Institut d’études africaines de cette Université. Il a enseigné plusieurs années en Afrique, puis à l’Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et à l’Université de Clermont-Ferrand II. Il est l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages sur l’histoire de l’Afrique, l’histoire coloniale et la décolonisation.
