El yacimiento arqueológico de L’Alcúdia fue declarado Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) en 1992, casi cien años después del descubrimiento de la famosa Dama en 1897. Aunque este hecho le ha dado relevancia internacional, el yacimiento es mucho más que la cuna de una pieza singular, ya que en él se entrelazan huellas de las diversas sociedades que lo habitaron. L’Alcúdia reúne las condiciones y la potencialidad necesarias para convertirse en un referente de la historia y la arqueología valencianas. El Plan Director surge de la necesidad de diseñar un marco estratégico de gestión para el yacimiento de L’Alcúdia. Pretende potenciar su conocimiento y proyección cultural, garantizando que su tutela sea compatible con la visita pública y la socialización del BIC. Debe, en suma, planificar, desarrollar y evaluar a largo plazo programas de investigación, conservación, gestión, difusión y divulgación del bien tutelado. L’Alcúdia puede y debe convertirse en el paradigma de una historia crítica, inclusiva, bien comprendida y bien explicada, dejando de ser «el lugar donde salió la Dama» –mero espacio de remembranza y reivindicación permanente– para convertirse por fin en un conjunto arqueológico modélico que, quizá así, podría visitar periódicamente la Dama.

The Incas carried out some of the most dramatic ceremonies known to us from ancient times. Groups of people walked hundreds of miles across arid and mountainous terrain to perform them on mountains over 6,096 m (20,000 feet) high. The most important offerings made during these pilgrimages involved human sacrifices (capacochas). Although Spanish chroniclers wrote about these offerings and the state sponsored processions of which they were a part, their accounts were based on second-hand sources, and the only direct evidence we have of the capacocha sacrifices comes to us from archaeological excavations. Some of the most thoroughly documented of these were undertaken on high mountain summits, where the material evidence has been exceptionally well preserved. In this study we describe the results of research undertaken on Mount Llullaillaco (6,739 m/22,109 feet), which has the world's highest archaeological site. The types of ruins and artifact assemblages recovered are described and analyzed. By comparing the archaeological evidence with the chroniclers' accounts and with findings from other mountaintop sites, common patterns are demonstrated; while at the same time previously little known elements contribute to our understanding of key aspects of Inca religion. This study illustrates the importance of archaeological sites being placed within the broader context of physical and sacred features of the natural landscape.

Soil hydrology determines the water–soil–plant interactions in the Earth’s system because porous medium acts as an interface within the atmosphere and lithosphere; regulates main processes such as runoff discharge, aquifer recharge, movement of water, and solutes into the soil; and ultimately the amount of water retained and available for plants growth. Soil hydrology can be strongly affected by land management. Therefore, investigations aimed at assessing the impact of land management changes on soil hydrology are necessary, especially to optimize water resources. This Special Issue collects 12 original contributions addressing the state-of-the-art advances in soil hydrology for sustainable land management. These contributions cover a wide range of topics including (i) the effects of land use change, (ii) water use efficiency, (iii) erosion risk, (iv) solute transport, and (v) new methods and devices for improved characterization of soil physical and hydraulic properties. They include both field and laboratory experiments as well as modelling studies. Different spatial scales, i.e., from field to regional scales, and a wide range of geographic regions are also covered. The collection of these manuscripts presented in this Special Issue provides a relevant knowledge contribution for effective saving water resources and sustainable land management.
