Vi sono più modi di intendere la modernità ed è già stato scritto come il "ripensare la modernità" abbia portato a sviluppare il concetto che nella cultura dominante nell'Occidente del XX secolo non ne esiste una unica. Già il Congresso del 2007 aveva fatto il punto sullo stato degli studi e sul vasto panorama del patrimonio architettonico esistente. Nuove ricerche sul tema prendono ora corpo in due volumi curati da Maria Luisa Neri, il primo, e da Laura Marcucci, il secondo. Due parti solo apparentemente autonome, ma in realtà interattive, caratterizzano questo primo volume. La prima parte concentra l'attenzione sul ruolo svolto dalle riviste d'architettura nel dibattito e nella divulgazione del sapere architettonico internazionale. La seconda è l'esemplificazione di consuetudini e comportamenti professionali emblematici di esperienze tutte vissute all'interno di un mondo di idee legate alla ricerca di una modernità altra e di modi di procedere nella prassi operativa tipici di gran parte della società italiana. MARIA LUISA NERI, professore ordinario di Storia dell'Architettura Contemporanea presso la Scuola di Architettura e Design Eduardo Vittoria dell'Università degli Studi di Camerino, ha promosso ricerche sul territorio di età medievale, e sulla città, sull'architettura e sugli architetti dell'Ottocento e del Novecento. Ha curato il volume Le fondazioni benedettine nelle Marche: materiali per un atlante storico geografico dei sistemi insediativi territoriali,Napoli 2007 (Premio Salimbeni per la Storia e la Critica d'Arte,menzione d'onore). È autrice delle monografie su Mario De Renzi. L'architettura come mestiere, 1897-1967, Roma 1992 e Enrico Del Debbio,Milano 2006. Tra i numerosi studi sull'Ottocento si ricorda il recente Architettura e città nell'Ottocento. Percorsi e protagonisti di una storia europea, Roma 2011 (con Simonetta Ciranna e Gerardo Doti).

La storiografia ha guardato alla produzione architettonica del Novecento con differenti apporti critici, ma denominatore comune è stato il perenne riferimento al Movimento Moderno, ritenuto il parametro unico e il termine di paragone per qualunque "giudizio di valore". Ne è conseguito che, superficialmente etichettata quale manifestazione accademica o tardo Eclettica, gran parte dell'operosità degli architetti della prima metà del Novecento è stata a lungo emarginata dalle trattazioni di Storia dell'architettura contemporanea.
