In questi anni della mia esistenza ho vissuto come se fossi sommerso sotto una coltre spessa. Non ho permesso alle mie emozioni più profonde, quelle relative al "perché proprio a me", di travolgermi. Ho evitato gli interrogativi più dolorosi, ho cercato di affrontare la vita razionalizzando ogni sensazione, mi sono eterodiretto nonostante l'attività riflessiva mi coinvolga costantemente. Ho prediletto l'uso critico della ragione, per difesa, per non lasciarmi andare in balia delle onde che si infrangono su di me. Tuttavia, mentre scrivo, sono perfettamente consapevole che l'uomo non sia fatto solo di ratio, sia qualcosa di più esteso e profondo.La scrittura mi ha aiutato a mettermi in contatto con la mia essenza e grazie ad essa sono riuscito ad aprirmi e a trovare contatto con ciò che era dentro di me. La mia malattia non deve sabotare la mia vita, più di quanto già faccia. Non sono disposto a lasciarle altro spazio. Non deve vincere, tagliandomi fuori dal mondo reale. Adesso so che la malattia è la mia essenza, la quale tuttavia non si esaurisce con essa. Sono cuore, anima, passioni, sogni e desideri. E sogno un mondo in cui ognuno sia libero di manifestare la propria essenza. Possa esprimersi senza remore, sentirsi amato e amare chi desidera; un mondo in cui ognuno si senti realizzato per quello che è e ciò che desidera fare ma nel rispetto del prossimo. In questi 18 anni di vita io dovuto affrontare diverse situazioni e ho riflettuto sul fatto che nonostante la mia condizione anch'io vivo le stesse paure e provo le stesse emozioni di tutti i ragazzi della mia età. Mi sono piaciute ragazze che non ho avvicinato per timidezza, per timore che potessero rifiutarmi per via della mia "sedia speciale" o giudicarmi dalle apparenze e poi ho provato una fitta di gelosia scoprendole legate ad altri ragazzi. Così, a causa della mia timidezza, ho perso delle occasioni ma ho imparato molto. Ho capito che devo afferrare ogni occasione che mi capita e non abbandonare nulla. Le questioni di cuore sono ancora un montagna da scalare, ma comunque continuo a sperare che grazie alle mie capacità e al mio agire potrò migliorarmi e trovare la piena realizzazione perché ho fiducia nel genere umano e nelle "buongustaie".

Since Ovid, the concept of metamorphosis has been an irresistible temptation for writers, not only as a metaphor for shifting personal identity but as a way of exploring ideas of cultural and political transition. The essays in this volume show how authors from Ovid, Chaucer, and Shakespeare to Thomas Mann, Karen Blixen, and 20th-century science fiction writers, have used this pervasive concept to raise fundamental questions about the nature and agency of radical change.
