Il periodo trascorso a Marsiglia tra il 1940 e il 1942, in attesa di imbarcarsi per gli Stati Uniti, rappresenta per Simone Weil una stagione di fioritura delle amicizie e un momento di straordinaria ricchezza e fecondità del pensiero e della scrittura. Il numero di lettere inviate a familiari e amici è impressionante, ma quel che più stupisce è la maniera in cui la sincerità degli affetti si coniuga con la ricerca della verità, che si va facendo sempre più pura e assoluta. Di questa continua vibrazione interiore dà testimonianza la prima parte di questo libro che ricostruisce la complessa esperienza culturale e sentimentale vissuta a Marsiglia, proponendo le lettere che Simone invia a due amici, con i quali la parola scritta si offre come l’unico strumento di conoscenza reciproca. Sono Joë Bousquet, il poeta di Carcassonne, paralizzato in seguito alle ferite riportate durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, e Antonio Atarés, contadino anarchico aragonese, prima rinchiuso nel campo d’internamento del Vernet e poi spedito a Djelfa, sull’altopiano algerino. Il volume si chiude con la nuova traduzione di alcune pagine, tratte da Le forme dell’amore implicito di Dio, in cui si condensa la splendida, vertiginosa concezione dell’amicizia elaborata e concretamente vissuta da Simone Weil.
