Employées sans réelle distinction de sens par la plupart des commentateurs de la vie politique à l’occasion des soirées électorales, les expressions de « fief », « bastion », « terre de mission » et « désert » électoraux semblent communément renvoyer à une identité politique locale où s’entremêlent tradition, folklore et jeu d’influence d’une famille ou d’une personnalité politique. Au-delà des clichés véhiculés par l’abondance de références métaphoriques, ces expressions soulèvent de véritables enjeux méthodologiques pour les historiens travaillant sur les identités et cultures politiques, l’approche biographique ou la monographie. Appréhender le phénomène de territorialisation de la vie politique implique de prêter autant d’attention aux électeurs – explication des votes et analyse des comportements électoraux – qu’aux élus à travers le cumul des mandats, le savoir-faire électoral ou la notabilité. Cette voie d’entrée doit conduire à analyser avec profit les positions de pouvoir politique et leur ancrage territorial. « C’est donc un programme ambitieux que se fixe cet ouvrage collectif puisqu’il s’agit, cent ans après, de reprendre à nouveaux frais l’enquête pionnière conduite par André Siegfried en 1913 dans son fameux Tableau politique de la France de l’Ouest, mais avec une double complexification. La confrontation des travaux et méthodes d’une trentaine de spécialistes permet en effet de saisir l’ensemble national en variant les focales, avec de surcroît quelques coups de projecteur sur l’international, et le tout sur deux siècles d’histoire contemporaine » (S. Berstein). Cette démarche stimulante confirme tout l’intérêt d’une approche de la vie politique française sous l’angle territorial.

This book is one of the results of the III International Seminar on Research on Mediatization and Social Processes held in 2019. The III International Seminar on Research on Mediatization and Social Processes had a program developed on two levels: Debate Tables, with invited researchers (five discussion tables, with the participation of researchers from France (3), Argentina (2), Germany (1), and Brazil (5). The schedule of the III Seminar and its structure can be seen at https://www.midiaticom.org/seminario-midiatizacao/grade-de-programacao-2019/. In total, there were 15 hours of debates at the five Discussion Tables. Methodologically, the Seminar takes place in the articulation of Debate Tables with international guests and Working Groups with the presence of researchers, doctors, doctoral students, masters, and masters' degree students. We point out that, even in the scope of training processes, master's and doctoral students, masters and doctors, post-doctors and post-doctoral graduates, and members of the organizing Research Group take part as reviewers, in a blind evaluation process, of the expanded abstracts submitted by graduates with a lower title - under the coordination of the research professors from the Mediatization and Social Processes Group. They evaluated (in a group of more than three dozen reviewers) each of the works submitted by colleagues with a lower instructional level, with classificatory notes, which resulted in the approved works. They were then grouped by the Organizing Committee, successively, until they reached the event's working groups.

This book explores the new types of political organization that emerged in Western Europe and the United States during the nineteenth century, from popular meetings to single-issue organizations and political parties. The development of these has often been used to demonstrate a movement towards democratic representation or political institutionalization. This volume challenges the idea that the development of ‘democracy’ is a story of rise and progress at all. It is rather a story of continuous but never completely satisfying attempts of interpreting the rule of the people. Taking the perspective of nineteenth-century organizers as its point of departure, this study shows that contemporaries hardly distinguished between petitioning, meeting and association. The attraction of organizing was that it promised representation, accountability and popular participation. Only in the twentieth century did parties reliable partners for the state in averting revolution, managing the unpredictable effects of universal suffrage, and reforming society. This collection analyzes them in their earliest stage, as just one of several types of civil society organizations, that did not differ that much from each other. The promise of organization, and the experiments that resulted from it, deeply impacted modern politics.

This book analyzes the negotiation of socio-political concepts, such as citizenship, republicanism, and representation, between “ordinary” French citizens and their representatives in parliament during the early twentieth century. By examining the letters written to French Deputies of the Chamber (députés) at a tumultuous time in French political history, the author sheds light on the role that politically unorganized citizens played in the process of democratization. Central to the investigation are the aspirations, wishes and demands of individuals acting on their own or as spokespersons for informal communities. The way that they formulated personal requests in their letters to députés reveals their expectations of political representatives, the regime, and their own place in society. By taking a closer look at the epistolary relations between voters and non voters on the one hand and their deputies on the other during a time of rapidly succeeding governments, economic crises and changes in electoral laws, this book demonstrates how the Third Republic’s existence was co-determined by ordinary citizens’ perceptions of the regime. Helping readers to reflect on the nuances of the politicization process, this innovative book offers unique insights for those researching French political history and modern European political culture.
