Sarà spettatrice della morte della dodicenne Rosemund e della sorella di cinque anni Agnes, delle donne di casa ed infine di padre Roche, il prete che l’aveva vista apparire dal nulla. Nel futuro, invece, la quarantena ha costretto le persone più disparate a vivere insieme, come il tutor di Kivrin, Dunworthy, un uomo molto pacato e preoccupato per lei, il vicepreside di Storia, Gilchrist, irascibile e incompetente, la dottoressa Ahrens e suo nipote dodicenne… tutti circondati da personaggi drammatici e spesso tragicamente comici nella loro insofferenza, costretti a stare uniti per combattere una nuova epidemia, obbligati al sacrificio della reclusione forzata e a rispettare rigide regole di comportamento. Chi riuscirà a salvarsi e come? E Kirvin, riuscirà a tornare a casa?
