«Giacomo Matteotti condusse una opposizione intransigente nei confronti del fascismo, la cui natura e pericolosità aveva acutamente compreso e denunciato per tempo. Fu l’uomo del coraggio. Per questo il fascismo volle che fosse consegnato alla tomba, così da farne tacere la voce». Il 10 giugno 1924 Giacomo Matteotti, segretario del Partito socialista unitario, fu rapito e trucidato a Roma ad opera di una squadra di sicari fascisti, colpevole di aver osato in un celebre discorso alla Camera denunciare che le elezioni politiche svoltesi il 6 aprile di quell’anno erano avvenute in un clima di sistematiche violenze e di brogli sfacciati. Matteotti pagò con la vita il suo coraggio. L’assassinio fece traballare il governo Mussolini, aprendo una crisi gravissima nella politica e nella società italiane, superata da un lato per la debolezza dimostrata dalle opposizioni divise sul da farsi, e dall’altro per l’appoggio dato al governo dalla monarchia, dalla gran parte della borghesia e dall’esercito. Il delitto ebbe una eco enorme non solo in Italia. Matteotti entrò nella leggenda: fuori dai confini dell’Italia fascista egli divenne, negli anni del regime, il simbolo della lotta contro il fascismo; in un gran numero di piazze gli vennero eretti monumenti; pittori, scultori e poeti gli dedicarono opere. Durante la guerra di Spagna e la Resistenza combatterono Brigate ispirate al suo nome. In Italia, sconfitto il fascismo, la figura di Matteotti fu finalmente riscoperta, ma non fu celebrata come avrebbe meritato: il Partito comunista e anche quello socialista, nella fase in cui rimase ad esso subordinato, lo considerarono, per un lungo periodo, un «socialdemocratico», un «riformista», insomma un eretico. La giusta valutazione del suo pensiero e della sua opera è stata resa finalmente possibile a partire dagli anni ottanta, quando venne avviata la pubblicazione completa dei suoi scritti. Questo acuto saggio di Massimo L. Salvadori intende contribuire a rimuovere, a cent’anni di distanza, la patina dell’oblio, ma anche quella della pura e semplice celebrazione. Ma Matteotti fu soprattutto l’uomo del coraggio, come testimoniano gli scritti raccolti nell’appendice al volume, composta da un lungo articolo di Andrea Caffi, dal titolo Cronaca di dieci giornate, pubblicato il 30 giugno del 1924, a ridosso del sequestro e dell’assassinio Matteotti, ricostruendone le fasi e documentandone le responsabilità e le ripercussioni politiche; e da una breve scelta di articoli, lettere e discorsi di Giacomo Matteotti. La forza delle sue parole dimostra che egli fu un martire del fascismo esattamente perché ne era stato il lucido analista, l’accanito e conseguente avversario.

Non è raro che si senta parlare di un Trilussa afascista, non fascista, mussoliniano, o di un Trilussa crepuscolare, perso nella Roma della sua gioventù e incapace di cogliere il senso delle novità introdotte dal regime. Seguendo la sua produzione poetica, Trilussa si staglia sul suo tempo per il coraggio mostrato nel farsi paladino della pace, dell’uguaglianza e del libero pensiero e nel denunciare, con una satira sottile, i limiti dell’uomo e della politica, di qualunque colore; per essersi fatto interprete degli stati d’animo del popolo e delle sue tensioni più profonde, per quel non detto, quei puntini sospensivi che più che un’autocensura erano un rimando a ciò che tutti potevano capire senza doverselo sentir dire. Trilussa non fu fascista e non fu mussoliniano. Tantomeno fu fascistizzabile, nonostante tra i suoi estimatori vi fossero diversi esponenti del regime. L’informatrice Elvira Gottardi lo definì un “antifascista cerebrale”. La Polizia politica creò un fascicolo a suo carico, mise sotto controllo il suo telefono e lo circondò di informatori. Il governo lo lasciò “libero” di pubblicare, perché non si poteva mettere la mordacchia a un intellettuale di fama mondiale e per non ledere gli interessi del fido Mondadori. Al tempo stesso non gli conferì alcun riconoscimento: non fu mai nominato accademico d’Italia e non gli furono mai concessi sussidi, di cui beneficiarono invece centinaia di intellettuali.
