Il volume illustra i risultati degli studi sull'architettura rinascimentale a Pisa, ottenuti, nell'ambito del Programma di Ricerca di Interesse Nazionale L'architettura del classicismo tra Quattrocento e Cinquecento, da un gruppo di ricercatori facenti riferimento al Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile dell'Università di Pisa. Lo studio indaga la radicale e diffusa metamorfosi del volto medievale della città di Pisa, avvenuta nell'arco di quasi due secoli, e esamina la complessità degli elementi che concorrono alla definizione dell'architettura segnata dalla varietas del classicismo. Durante la prima dominazione fiorentina Pisa si avvia verso una nuova stagione architettonica, per merito dell'arcivescovo Filippo de'Medici e grazie alla politica di rilancio della città intrapresa dai Medici, attuando alcune singolari soluzioni architettoniche che, orientate verso il gusto delle antiche magnificenze, echeggiano le novità urbinate e richiamano la tradizione locale (Palazzo Arcivescovile), ma ricercano anche le significative innovazioni tipologico- stilistiche (la Sapienza). Il governo mediceo da Cosimo I a Cosimo II rappresenta, invece, una florida stagione delle trasformazioni architettoniche alla moderna e del rinnovamento degli spazi urbani. Con il concorso degli interessi di regime e dell'ideologia cattolica, Ferdinando I- ricollegandosi alla lezione vasariana pronunciata per volere di Cosimo I nella Piazza dei Cavalieri- provvide a trasformare le architetture in scenografie atte a rappresentare il potere del perfetto Principe cristiano contro riformato. Le realizzazioni vedono nelle scelte culturali, per ovvie ragioni politiche, il riferimento a Firenze, ma manifestano anche le peculiarità autoctone e più volte rivelano la presenza degli echi albertiani, offrendo le soluzioni originali. Nelle schede di questo volume, esemplificative di varie forme edilizie e di spazi urbani, si analizzano i casi significativi per il periodo della prima occupazione fiorentina e per la prima età granducale, mentre nei saggi introduttivi si tenta di abbozzare le linee di evoluzione dei processi di assimilazione del lessico rinascimentale fiorentino e di persistenze di tematiche autonome, evidenziando l'eterogeneità dei fenomeni e l'originalità delle sperimentazioni. Ewa Karwacka Codini, Professore associato di Storia dell'Architettura presso la Facoltà di Ingegneria dell'Università di Pisa, ha coordinato il lavoro dell'unità di ricerca del Prin 2003 Architettura del classicismo tra Quattrocento e Cinquecento. Ha svolto attività di ricerca presso la Scuola Normale di Pisa e presso l'Università di Pisa. Pur spaziando nei periodi e nelle aree geografiche diverse, ha investigato con particolare riguardo i temi e i protagonisti della storia dell'architettura dell'età moderna, e in particolare del Rinascimento in Toscana. Oltre ad aver partecipato a numerosi convegni nazionali e internazionali, nonché ad aver curato le mostre, ha fatto parte di molti progetti di ricerca nazionali e internazionali. È autrice di numerose pubblicazioni, di cui alcune in lingue straniere, che rivelano un particolare interesse per lo studio critico dell'opera architettonica esaminata nel suo contesto culturale e nella sua realtà costruita.
