Les oeuvres d'art ne se présentent jamais seules. Qu'elles soient stockées dans les réserves d'un musée, exposées dans un centre d'art ou simplement reproduites dans une revue, elles font l'objet de mises en forme spécifiques et sont accompagnées de textes, de discours et de prises de parole en tous genres. Il s'agit parfois de propos très construits - travaux universitaires, notices de catalogues, visites-conférences - et, dans d'autres cas, d'éléments nettement moins ambitieux - cartels, cartons d'invitation, conversations de vernissage. Le point commun à ces différents éléments est néanmoins de mettre en scène les oeuvres d'art et de leur donner sens, ne serait-ce que temporairement. Décrire les fonctions spécifiques que les formes médiatrices occupent aux côtés des oeuvres conduit alors à envisager différemment la relation esthétique. L'hypothèse ici avancée est que certaines notions issues de la pragmatique linguistique - énonciation, actes de langage, dialogisme, polyphonie, etc. - permettent de décrire aussi précisément que possible le rôle que jouent textes et discours d'accompagnement dans la constitution, la compréhension et le fonctionnement ordinaire de l'art contemporain.
