Faire un reportage sur la ligne Toulouse-Santiago du Chili ! C'était en 1931. Pour Jean-Gérard Fleury, ce fut l'occasion de découvrir l'aviation, de plonger dans la grande aventure de l'Aéropostale, et de se lier d'amitié avec des hommes tels que Saint-Exupéry, Guillaumet et Mermoz. Mais suivre en observateur, si passionné fut-il, les exploits de ses amis, n'était pas suffisant. Lui aussi devait être pilote... et, pour ce faire, un seul maître : Mermoz ! Le grand Mermoz, qui lui fit passer son brevet. Dès lors, il ne s'intéresse plus qu'à l'aviation : chef des services aéronautiques du Jour-Écho de Paris et de Paris-Soir, il participe à de nombreux vols en Europe, en Afrique et en Amérique du Sud. Avant-guerre, il se livre à des enquêtes sur les grandes routes aériennes, et devient le porte-parole des équipages. Au début des hostilités, il est correspondant de guerre dans la Royal Air Force, puis, chargé d'une mission au Brésil, il obtient la concession de la fabrique nationale d'avions pour l'ingénieur René Couzinet. Après-guerre, il représente la Société des avions Louis Bréguet et Sud-Aviation au Brésil, tout en restant correspondant du journal France Soir. « La dernière chanson de geste de notre temps » : c'est à Joseph Kessel, que l'on doit d'avoir trouvé l'expression la plus juste pour qualifier la prodigieuse histoire des lignes aériennes Latécoère, et de la Compagnie générale aéropostale. Cet album, présenté par Jean-Gérard Fleury, journaliste écrivain auteur de « La Ligne », l'ouvrage le plus complet sur la conquête aérienne de l'Atlantique Sud, ajoute - aux récits - les images qui, jusqu'ici, manquaient : les voici. Ces documents, empruntés à des archives - et surtout aux pionniers - sont des photographies que l'auteur a classées en observant, le plus possible, la chronologie des faits qui se sont succédé, parfois simultanément, de 1918 à 1933, date de la création de la Compagnie Air France, puis jusqu'à Concorde. Volontairement, on leur a laissé leur caractère initial, c'est-à-dire l'imperfection technique de la photo d'amateur, faite à la hâte par ceux qui vivaient l'événement. C'est une imagerie sans retouche, donc intacte dans son authenticité, à laquelle il manquera toujours certains grands faits, comme l'atterrissage forcé de Mermoz dans les Andes,et l'instant où Guillaumet sortit indemne de l'accident dans la Laguna Diamente : le photographe n'était pas là...
