Il padre, che lo conduceva con sé nei suoi viaggi d'affari in Francia, volle rinominarlo 'Francesco' in omaggio alla dolce terra della poesia cortese, che il ragazzo amava. Francesco non era né nobile né particolarmente bello e il suo fisico era fragile, cagionevole. Ma era ricco, brillante, affascinante, spiritoso, sapeva cantare, suonare e danzare: era il 'principe della gioventù' della sua città. Sognava la gloria, le imprese cavalleresche in paesi lontani, l'amore. Poi venne la lotta civile nella sua città, alla quale prese parte, e infine la guerra contro Perugia: combatté, forse uccise, restò alcuni mesi prigioniero. Quando tornò a casa, gli amici avrebbero voluto vederlo riprendere la vita spensierata di prima. Ma non era più lui. Il contatto con la guerra e con il dolore lo aveva cambiato. Una volta incontrò un lebbroso: la lebbra gli aveva sempre fatto paura e orrore. Ma quel giorno scese da cavallo e abbracciò quel miserabile. Da allora, sarebbe diventato cavaliere del Cristo.
