Il n'a pas la pretention de remplacer aucun de ces nombreux manuels d'education maternelle, justement apprecies, comme on a tant refait d'apres Comenius, Locke, Basedow, Rousseau, Mme Pape-Garpantier, etc. Mais, a cote de ces plus ou moins bons traites, presque tous essentiellement pratiques, peut-etre le mien aura-t-il l'avantage d'offrir des considerations theoriques dont leurs auteurs ne s'etaient guere preoccupes. On ne doit voir donc ici qu'un essai de psychologie appliquee a l'education intellectuelle du petit enfant. La culture du sens esthetique fait incontestablement partie de l'education dite intellectuelle. Aussi lui ai-je consacre une large place a la fin de mon livre, resumant les morceaux les mieux venus de l'Art et de la poesie chez l'enfant, qu'il m'a paru moins convenable de refondre pour une nouvelle edition.
