Since the dawn of photography in 1839, Milan has been a protagonist of the new Art thanks to local professionals and amateurs who in some cases became beacons at international level. In short, the Lombard capital became (and continued to be in the following decades) a real crossroads of daguerreotypists and photographers, Italian and foreign, who immortalized the evolution of the city, portrayed its inhabitants and monuments, and reproduced objects and works of art with the greatest possible fidelity. This book, published following lengthy and in-depth research work in Italy and abroad, tells the stories – until now unknown – of these photographers, both men and women (about 170) also through various documents and announcements printed in newspapers of the time, and includes a catalogue of over 200 images representative of their activity in nineteenth-century Milan.
