A partire dal XVII centenario dell'Editto di Milano, il cardinale Scola indaga sul pensiero e sulla pratica della libertà religiosa, al centro di un dibattito più che mai attuale e complesso per le marcate diversità che il problema presenta nelle democrazie rispetto alle dittature, nei Paesi a maggioranza musulmana e in quelli più secolarizzati. Dopo aver ripercorso, per sommi capi, il cammino travagliato della libertà religiosa dall'initium mancato di Costantino e Licinio fino al Concilio Vaticano II, a Giovanni Paolo II e Benedetto XVI, l'autore si sofferma su vari "nodi" del problema, in particolare sulla libertà di fedi e di culture nella società plurale. E parla del valore irrinunciabile della aconfessionalità dello Stato: per l'arcivescovo di Milano è necessario uno Stato che, senza far propria una specifica visione, non interpreti la sua aconfessionalità come "distacco", come una neutralizzazione delle fedi e delle culture che si esprimono nella società civile, ma apra spazi in cui ciascun soggetto, personale e sociale, possa portare il proprio contributo all'edificazione del bene comune. In questo orizzonte, la libertà di religioni e di culture si presenta come la più sensibile cartina di tornasole del grado di civiltà delle nostre società plurali. Non c'è spazio in queste pagine per sterili nostalgie del passato, ma a partire dal bene pratico comune che è l'essere insieme si suggerisce qualche passo per il cammino futuro.
