Il Giappone e le sue mille sfumature! Un paese di contraddizioni, che ha da sempre esercitato un fascino particolare nell’immaginario occidentale. Questo libro vuole discutere la condizione femminile nell’ antica e moderna società giapponese. Lo studio della condizione della donna in Giappone è stato scritto, considerando la sua evoluzione nel tempo: dalle dame di Corte del periodo Heian (794-1185 d.C.) alle donne emancipate del ventesimo secolo, fino alla situazione peculiare di una delle figure più emblematiche esistenti in Giappone, la geisha. La donna, durante il suo lungo e difficile percorso storico, ha modificato sostanzialmente la sua percezione nell’immaginario collettivo maschile. Nella nostra era contemporanea, nonostante tanti cambiamenti anche positivi in campo lavorativo, esiste tutt’ora un accentuato servilismo nei confronti degli uomini. La mentalità maschile, nonostante profonde mutazioni temporali, è rimasta fondamentalmente tradizionalista. Oltre a discorrere della condizione femminile durante il periodo storico antico e contemporaneo ho voluto trattare anche dell’infanzia in Giappone ed in particolar modo delle tecniche e metodi pedagogici utilizzate in quel Paese. L’educazione infantile è stata descritta nel solo Giappone contemporaneo, analizzando le diverse tematiche e metodi pedagogici attuati nella scuola elementare Komatsudani e della differenza tra l’educazione dei bambini, maschi e femmine. Ed in ultima analisi, ma, a mio avviso, la più affascinante l’educazione e la peculiare condizione della geisha, l’unica classe sociale femminile di rilevanza nell’antica cultura giapponese. Scopo di questa opera è il tentativo di fare “avvicinare” la nostra cultura a quella giapponese, nella convinzione che attraverso la conoscenza di questa società sia possibile apprezzare e conoscere alcuni aspetti del modo di vivere e dei costumi del Giappone.

This book pursues the specific case of Italian travel narratives in the Far East, through a focus on the experience of Japan in works by writers who visited the Land of the Rising Sun beginning in the Meiji period (1868-1912) and during the concomitant opening of Japan's relations with the West. Drawing from the fields of Postcolonial and Transnational Studies, analysis of these texts explores one central question: what does it mean to imagine Japanese culture as contributing to Italian culture? Each author shares in common an attempt to disrupt ideas about dichotomies and unbalanced power relationships between East and West. Proposing the notion of 'relational Orientalism, ' this book suggests that Italian travelogues to Japan, in many cases, pursued the goal of building imaginary transnational communities, predicated on commonalities and integration, by claiming what they perceived as 'Oriental' as their own. In contrast with a long history of Western representations of Japan as inferior and irrational, Searching for Japan identifies a positive overarching attitude toward the Far East country in modern Italian culture. Expanding the horizon of Italian transnational networks, normally situated within the Southern European region, this book reinstates the existence of an alternative Euro-Asian axis, operating across Italian history.

The goal of this book is to provide information, inspiration, and mentorship to teachers (namely foreign women, but not restricted to such) as they navigate the gendered waters of teaching English in Japanese higher education. Such a book is timely because foreign female university teachers are outnumbered by their foreign male colleagues by nearly three to one. This imbalance, however, is likely to change as reforms in hiring policies (which have until recently generally favored male applicants) have been widely implemented to encourage more female teachers and researchers. The narratives by the contributors to this book offer a kaleidoscope of experiences that transverse several loosely connected and overlapping themes. This book is, in a sense, a "girlfriend's guide to teaching in a Japanese university" in that it provides much practical information from those who are already in the field. It covers areas such as gaining entry into Japanese higher education teaching, searching for and obtaining tenure, managing a long-term professorial career, and taking on leadership responsibilities. The personal side of teaching is examined, with authors describing how individual interests have shaped their teaching practices. Family matters, such as negotiating maternity leave, reentering the workforce, and difficulties in balancing family and work are discussed by those who have "been there and done that". The darker issues of the job, such as harassment, racism, and native-speakerism are introduced, and several chapters with practical and legal information about how to combat them are included, as well as a list of valuable resources. The contributors to this volume have drawn upon their own unique experiences and have situated their stories in areas that are of great personal importance. The individual narratives, when taken together, highlight not only the complexity of the professional identity of EFL teachers but also the myriad of issues that shape the careers of women in Japanese higher education. These issues will resonate with all female EFL faculty, regardless of their geographical location.
