Son institution, telle qu'elle nous l'expose, l'investit de l'autorit� civile et politique sur tout l'Univers. C'est parce qu'elle est une puissance spirituelle qu'elle est une puissance temporelle. Anatole France publia L'Église et la République en 1904, un an avant la loi de séparation des Églises et de l'État. La loi instituant la séparation des Eglises et de l'Etat est adoptée le 9 décembre 1905. Trois ans auparavant Emile Combes, adversaire résolu de la religion, est porté au gouvernement. Combes déclare vouloir mener une politique "énergique de laïcité". Il interdit d'enseignement les congrégations le 7 juillet 1904, ouvrant ainsi la voie à une laïcisation complète de l'éducation, mais créant également de fortes divisions au sein de la société française, pour partie toujours encline à vouloir rester sous l'autorité de l'Eglise catholique. C'est dans ce contexte idéologique très tendu qu'Anatole France publie L'Eglise et la République en 1904, soit un an avant le vote de la loi. A l'heure où la France s'interroge à nouveau sur la place que doit occuper le religieux dans l'espace public, et parce que nous sommes indiscutablement dans un moment périlleux où la religion s'immisce de manière spectaculaire et violente dans la sphère politique, il est utile de relire ce texte fondateur qui illustre combien la sécularisation de notre société s'est accomplie dans un climat politique et social souvent très conflictuel, mais a aussi défini avec force la nation française au XXe siècle, revendiquant une laïcité active et vigilante.
