En France, tout finit par des chansons' is the well-known phrase which sums up the importance of chanson for the French. A song tradition that goes back to the Middle Ages and troubadours of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, chanson is part of the texture of everyday life in France - a part of the national identity and a barometer of popular taste. In this first study of chanson in English, Peter Hawkins examines the background to the genre and the difficulties in defining what is and what is not chanson. The focus then moves to the development of the singer-songwriter of chanson from 1880 to the present day. This period saw the emergence of national icons from Aristide Bruant at the end of the nineteenth century through to internationally recognized musicians such as Jacques Brel and Serge Gainsbourg. Each of these figures used chanson to express the particular moral dilemmas, tragic situations and moments of euphoria particular to themselves and their times. The book provides bibliographies, discographies and details of video recordings for each of the singer-songwriters that it discusses. It is both an essential reference guide to the genre and a useful case history of the adaptation of an ancient form to the demands of the modern mass media.

L’encyclopédie universelle dessinée est un projet en plusieurs étapes s’intéressant aux transitions, aux transformations et la persistance du passé dans le présent. Il s’agit d’un tome d’une encyclopédie jetée fort probablement car rendue désuète par l’internet. C’est de la que vint l’intérêt de l’altérer et la digitaliser pour la rendre publique sous la forme d’un e-book gratuit, afin qu’elle ne disparaisse pas avec l’ère de la digitalisation. Elle comporte divers poèmes résultant de la tenue d’ateliers créatifs collectifs qui ont créé des liens avec divers membre de mon entourage. Elle comporte aussi plusieurs images tirés d’une archive occulte personnelles, superposés aux images déjà présentes. J’utilise également le dessein afin de revisiter, réinterpréter et altérer l’encyclopédie parfois de façon sérieuse parfois satyrique ou même purement abstraite. Le résultat fut un livre artistique qui a été lu et vu par plusieurs personnes et ensuite digitalisé avant d’être détruit par le feu. Les cendres ont été recueillies et dispersés à l’intérieur d’un néon fluorescent de 8’. Le néon éteint s’apparente aux étoiles lointaines éteintes depuis longtemps dont nous percevons toujours la lumière. L’encyclopédie existe aujourd’hui sous sa forme digitale en tant qu’ebook gratuit, ainsi que sous forme de cendres dans le néon et en tant que souvenir dans la mémoire de ceux qui sont entrés en contact avec.
