Nombreuses sont les recherches sur les enfants des rues, mais aucune encore n'avait jusqu'à aujourd'hui été consacrée à la situation chinoise. La censure autour d'une réalité sociale que les autorités préfèrent nier ou cacher n'a pas empêché l'auteur de côtoyer les enfants qui survivent au quotidien dans les rues de Shanghai. Il restitue la rue telle qu'elle est vécue par les enfants mendiants et les enfants vagabonds chinois. A partir des comportements et des stratégies des acteurs sociaux sont éclairés les facteurs structurels de la marginalisation de ces enfants : la politique de planification des naissances et les disparités économiques. La hiérarchie informelle qui prévaut dans la rue, issue de la concentration du pouvoir et de la répression, ne laisse aux enfants qu'une très étroite marge de manœuvre. Les différences observées pourtant chez les enfants renvoient à la question de l'autonomie individuelle dans la dynamique de l'exclusion sociale.
