Sur une période de cinq ans, deux analystes ont enregistré des consultations de pédiatrie dans un service hospitalier de pointe. Du matériel ainsi recueilli, ce livre présente cinq observations dont la plupart s’échelonnent sur une longue durée, l’enfant et sa famille venant consulter régulièrement la même équipe de médecins spécialisés dans le traitement des maladies héréditaires. Les analystes présentes aux consultations n’y intervenaient pas, leur rôle se limitant à la stricte observation et à l’enregistrement. Le travail d’analyse a donc été pour l’essentiel un travail d’analyse de textes par des lectures à deux, répétées. Au fil de la lecture de ces textes enregistrés et retranscrits, ont surgi d’autres trames, non manifestes à la première écoute. Ainsi est apparu au-delà du dialogue conscient un ordre d’échanges subjectifs entre la mère, l’enfant et le médecin. Là, réside tout l’intérêt de cet ouvrage : il permet de démontrer combien la collaboration médecin/psychanalyste peut être féconde. Dans l’écart croissant entre le savoir médical et l’être souffrant, la psychanalyse peut contribuer à ce que le patient ne soit plus seulement considéré comme objet de soin, mais aussi comme une personne.
