Les rapports aux temps et aux lieux de travail se modifient. C'est l'avènement des organisations transversales destinées à faciliter le travail coopératif. Il s'agit pour les entreprises d'anticiper cette mutation radicale. Les technologies sont au rendez-vous, il reste à faire évoluer les organisations et éduquer les individus qui les feront vivre. Le travail à distance et l'utilisation des réseaux impliquent de nouvelles logiques de fonctionnement : une logique de confiance permettant le partage des compétences et une logique de service nécessitant une plus grande part de créativité. Depuis la constitution de la manufacture, le travail salarié s'effectue dans des lieux où la main d'œuvre est géographiquement concentrée : l'usine ou l'établissement. Le télétravail remet en cause ce principe fondateur. La possibilité de travailler en dehors de l'entreprise, grâce aux outils de télécommunication, n'est cependant pas un phénomène nouveau. Mais aujourd'hui, les conditions à la fois économiques, sociales et technologiques, permettent semble-t-il, d'envisager un développement beaucoup plus important du télétravail. Cette thèse qui s'inscrit à la croisée entre l'économie du travail et l'économie des organisations, met en évidence quels sont les impacts économiques et sociaux de ce nouveau mode de travail pour l'entreprise et les salariés. Pour ce faire, nous sommes partis du concept de relation de travail, qui désigne le système de relations économiques, juridique, sociales et symboliques qui lie les employeurs et leurs collaborateurs dans le cadre du travail salarié. Nous avons montré les conséquences provoquées par la distance induite entre l'entreprise et le salarié, sur la nature même de cette relation de travail. L'analyse d'expériences concrètes de télétravail en entreprises, a permis de mettre en évidence les impacts notables sur la relation de travail, et d'identifier les types d'entreprises les plus susceptibles d'adopter le télétravail. Le frein principal au développement du télétravail a trait à la dimension de lien social qu'offre l'entreprise : à distance, elle apparait beaucoup plus difficile à exercer. L'apprentissage de ce nouveau mode de travail devient alors indispensable, tant pour les entreprises que les salariés.
