Se il mondo è un teatro, e gli uomini e le donne non sono che attori, riflettere sulla menzogna significa interrogarsi sull’unica verità di cui l’uomo sembra disporre, quella che egli crede di possedere, e che quindi può scegliere di dire o non dire. Ma che cosa si cela tra i silenzi di questa presunta verità? Nel corso di tutta l’opera di Jean-Paul Sartre, il concetto di «malafede» è spesso risultato un tema complesso e difficile da trattare, soprattutto a causa del suo indissolubile legame con un’altra delle questioni dominanti della sua ricerca: il problema del nulla. Mentire, a sé stessi o agli altri, significa per Sartre fare compiuta esperienza del nulla – il dire di essere ciò che non si è. Eppure, proprio attraverso l’esperienza della menzogna l’uomo scopre la fondamentale teatralità del suo esistere. Ripercorrendo i capisaldi del suo impianto filosofico, della sua produzione teatrale e letteraria, nonché della sua concezione storica e del suo impegno politico, questo libro si propone di delineare le strutture fondanti dei rapporti onto-fenomenologici che si instaurano tra questi due termini del pensiero sartriano, proprio laddove tali strutture, in un esistenzialismo assolutamente libero da ogni vincolo o inquadramento, paiono essere assenti. Una libertà che, nell’orizzonte nullificante della malafede, è pur sempre limitata dall’«esistenza d’altri», indispensabile nella determinazione del soggetto. Il cameriere del caffè, il sadico, il perverso omicida: sono queste le figure emblematiche che Sartre ci propone per spiegarci il problema dell’autenticità della coscienza, la quale può solo concretizzarsi nella dimensione della «corporeità», sebbene attraverso una serie indefinita di negazioni. Negazioni che tuttavia sono essenziali per concepire il mondo come «rappresentazione», un teatro dove ogni uomo e donna è attore di sé medesimo. E la malafede non sarà altro che la verità della radicale menzogna che risiede nel cuore palpitante di ogni esistente: che il mondo non è mai ciò che dice di essere.
