On connaît l'origine du mot baroque : dans les années 1560 l'adjectif barocco naît en espagnol et en portugais, pour désigner une perle de forme irrégulière ; un siècle plus tard, il apparaît dans la langue française. Saint-Simon, dans ses Mémoires, qualifie de baroque, et donc de bizarre, la nomination incongrue d'un conseiller d'État. Enfin, dans l'Encyclopédie, Rousseau qualifie de baroque une musique à "l'harmonie confuse, chargée de modulations et de dissonances". Dans ce livre, Yves Bottineau donne les clés de l'art baroque, né en Italie avec la Contre-Réforme, et qui s'épanouit à travers l'Europe entière et ses colonies, de la fin du XVIe siècle jusqu'au milieu du XVIIIe. Tout commence à Rome : aidée par les jésuites, l'Église catholique affirme sa force avec des architectes comme Bernin ou Borromini et des peintres comme Caravage. Les uns et les autres font éclater les structures et créent une instabilité permanente dans leur art ; apparences mouvantes et trompe-l'œil créent une illusion dans laquelle le spectateur a désormais une place essentielle. Ce n'est d'ailleurs pas un hasard si la plupart de ces créateurs interviennent dans des registres différents. On ne peut plus séparer l'architecture, la sculpture et la peinture, mais également les arts décoratifs, les décors de fête, la musique et la danse. Le chef-d'œuvre baroque est une œuvre d'art totale. L'Europe entière y succombe, même la France, pourtant supposée cartésienne. Espagnols et Portugais emmèneront ces ors, ces flammes et ces anges en Amérique Latine, mais aussi en Extrême-Orient. C'est la première fois qu'un mouvement artistique devient véritablement mondial.

Few periods in history are so fundamentally contradictory as the Baroque, the culture flourishing from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth centuries in Europe. Republicanism and imperialism are typically understood to be located at opposite ends of the political spectrum. In Imperial Republics, Edward G. Andrew challenges the supposed incompatibility of these theories with regard to seventeenth- and eighteenth-century revolutions in England, the United States, and France. Many scholars have noted the influence of the Roman state on the ideology of republican revolutionaries, especially in the model it provided for transforming subordinate subjects into autonomous citizens. Andrew finds an equally important parallel between Rome's expansionary dynamic — in contrast to that of Athens, Sparta, or Carthage — and the imperial rivalries that emerged between the United States, France, and England in the age of revolutions. France and England are often seen as monarchies standing at opposite ends of the spectrum of seventeenth-century European political culture. On the one hand the Bourbon monarchy took the high road to absolutism, while on the other the Stuarts never quite recovered from the diminution of their royal authority following the regicide of Charles I in 1649. However, both monarchies shared a common medieval heritage of sacral kingship, and their histories remained deeply entangled throughout the century. This study focuses on the interaction between ideas of monarchy and images of power in the two countries between the execution of Mary Queen of Scots and the Glorious Revolution. It demonstrates that even in periods when politics were seemingly secularized, as in France at the end of the Wars of Religion, and in latter seventeenth- century England, the appeal to religious images and values still lent legitimacy to royal authority by emphasizing the sacral aura or providential role which church and religion conferred on monarchs.
