Qu’est-ce que l’État d’Israël ? Cette question, depuis la naissance de cet État, est demeurée sans réponse, comme l’atteste l’échec répété de promulguer une Constitution. Si elle reste en suspens, c’est que l’idée même d’État entre en collision avec la condition juive exilique. Le livre montre que l’État d’Israël est le produit de cette contradiction et non pas sa solution. Il s’ensuit que cet État n’est pas l’État-nation des juifs mais un État « pour les juifs », une forme ajustée à la condition exilique dans le monde politique moderne. Produit d’une conjoncture fortuite, cet État fut improvisé, bricolé à la hâte. Procédant de la critique de l’État en Europe, édifié comme un État-refuge, il est l’État de l’exil. À ce titre, il ne s’oppose pas au paradigme stato-national européen mais s’offre comme une alternative apte à insérer les États-nations dans une cosmopolitique dont nous avons urgemment besoin.
