Les temps changeant, en subissant l'influences de la civilisation in vitables, l'Eglise devait se transformer graduellement et perdait lentement le terrain jusqu' la r volution tranquille o l' tat a pris en charge ses zones d'activit s habituelles et l'a priv de presque tous ses privil ges. Mais m me maintenant, au debout du XXI me si cle o elle est bien loin de son importance et son omnipotence d'alors, il est incontestable que sans Eglise catholique ni Qu bec ni Canada entier n'auraient pu devenir ce qu'ils sont aujourd'hui.

Down Cathedral is one of the two oldest ecclesiastical foundations in Ulster still in use. Although the present structure dates from the early 13th century it is known that there had been a monastery and place of workship on the Hill of Down for many centuries before then. This book describes and illustrates the history of the Hill of Down from those earliest times to the present day. The relationship of St Patrick with the Hill is narrated and takes careful account of the latest research, some of it controversial, on the association of the island's patron saint with the Hill on which he is thought to be buried. The intriguing early and middle history of the Cathedral, including the building of the Benedictine monastery, the bishops and priors who ruled over it and its destruction at the dissolution of the monasteries in the middle of the 16th century, is told in clear and absorbing detail. Its subsequent restoration to full glory from the 1790s, largely due to the influence of the Downshire family, marks the beginning of the modern period for this much loved building. The story is brought right up to date with the recent appointment of a New Bishop and a new Dean. Important new sources in the State Papers and in archiepiscopal registers that have only recently become accessible have been used in the telling of this fascinating study. Many of the images in this work are published for the first time and include photographs of irreplaceable artifacts uncovered during the significant archaelogical excavations of the last few years. Partout, le monde a été créé, et puisqu’il y a un commencement des temps, il y aura forcément une fin des temps. Ceci étant d’ailleurs vérifié par la Science. Dans la Bible, il est parlé également de « fin », mais si l’Apocalypse n’exclut pas l’idée d’une catastrophe destructrice de l’Humanité, elle parle aussi d’une Révélation (c’est la signification du mot grec apocalypsos). Qui disant « Révélation » signifiant sans ambiguïté qu’il y a quelque chose d’autre « après ». Un Monde Nouveau, un temps nouveau. « La fin d’un temps » s’inscrit dans la Bonne Espérance d’un changement, radical et durable, une « révolution » dans notre façon de penser et notre façon d’être. Sommes-nous à la fin d’un temps ? retrace l’évolution d’un système qui eut ses heures de gloire et qui, devenu par trop obsolète, a abouti à un bouleversement. On ne peut ignorer la différence d’esprit entre l’Ancien Régime, royaliste, et le Nouveau Régime, républicain, mais on oublie facilement la différence, volontairement occultée, entre l’Église avant la Révolution et l’Église après la Révolution. Alors que la royauté était intimement liée à l’Église, cette Alliance entre le Trône et l’Autel qui remonte à la nuit des temps, la République, par une extension de la laïcité, s’est détachée des choses du Ciel, reléguant la divinité au rang de deus otiosus.
