The thirtieth volume of Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies adds significantly to the corpus of scholarship on geography's multiple histories and biographies with nine essays on figures from Britain, France, the USA and Spain. Each was distinguished in his or her own scholarship and made distinctive contributions in specific fields -- as historical, political or population geographers, and, in one case, as a hydrologist-geomorphologist. The subjects also shared a commitment to the educational benefits of geography and of geographical research that was rooted in a vision of geography as socially illuminating and individually life-changing. Here is further rich testimony of the importance of geographers' lives to the lived experience of geography in practice.

The historical narratives of the Inca dynasty, known to us through Spanish records, present several discrepancies that scholarship has long attributed to the biases and agendas of colonial actors. Drawing on a redefinition of royal descent and a comparative literary analysis of primary sources, this book restores the pre-Hispanic voices embedded in the chronicles. It identifies two distinctive bodies of Inca oral traditions, each of which encloses a mutually conflicting representation of the past that, considered together, reproduces patterns of Cuzco’s moiety division. Building on this new insight, the author revisits dual representations in the cosmology and ritual calendar of the ruling elite. The result is a fresh contribution to ethnohistorical works that have explored native ways of constructing history.

The question of individuality in non-European, and especially South Asian societies is a controversial one. Studies in anthropology and psychology undertaken in recent years on concepts of person and self approach the problem by concentrating on ideologies; the question of practice remains largely neglected. This is the first study to examine the individual-dividual debate empirically from the - emic - perspective of decision making, observed over a two-year period among the Bakkarwal, Himalayan Muslim pastoralists. Of particular significance is the fact that the author bases her approach on the life cycle and on gender and status differences. Aparna Rao is a research associate at the Institut für Völkerkunde, University of Cologne
