Les ouvrages réunis dans ce volume sont tous consacrés à ce problème de l'action, dont ils élucident à la fois la signification philosophique et les implications plus directement "politiques". Publiés entre 1958 (Condition de l'homme moderne) et 1972 (Du mensonge à la violence), ils sont donc postérieurs au premier grand livre de Hannah Arendt, Les Origines du totalitarisme (1951), dont ils donnent en quelque sorte le contrepoint ; Hannah Arendt y montre ce qui, dans "l'humaine condition", peut toujours être source de résistance contre tous les processus de destruction dont le totalitarisme moderne a représenté une forme paroxystique mais dont certains traits se retrouvent dans toutes les sociétés modernes. Tous ces ouvrages s'appuient sur un travail considérable d'élucidation philosophique, dont on peut mesurer l'ampleur en lisant le Journal de pensée mais, contrairement aux grands livres posthumes, ils sont centrés sur les questions "pratiques", même lorsqu'ils proposent une interprétation d'ensemble de constructions "théoriques" aussi considérables que la science moderne ou la philosophie de l'histoire".
