Proclus (c. 410 - 485) was one of the major Greek philosophers of late Antiquity. In his metaphysics he developed and systematized fundamental problems of Plato's thought, such as participation; transcendence - immanence; causation - participation - return; henads and monads. In a theological way he interpreted some of Plato's dialogues. In the tradition of the neo-platonic school of Athens he tried to bring together Orpheus, Pythagoras and Plato. Before and after his works had been translated into Latin, Proclus influenced the Christian West through the Liber de causis ("Book of Causes"), a Latin translation of an anonymous Arab version of his Elementatio theologica. Among those who commented on the Liber or on some of its theses, were many well-known philosophers: Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Master Eckhart, Berthold of Moosberg and William of Ockham. The Liber de causis stimulated discussions about the concepts of God, first and second causality, universals, metaphysics of being as opposed to metaphysics of the one. In the volume various specialists discuss these problems: Saffrey, De Rijk, Meyer, Steel, De Libera, Aertsen, Beierwaltes and Bos.

L’ouvrage se propose d’appliquer la méthode éprouvée du comparatisme structural indo-européen aux textes poétiques, mythologiques et désormais philosophiques, notamment présocratiques, afin de repenser l’unité de la sagesse grecque (sophía). Comment concilier la sagacité vide du déchiffreur d’énigmes qui, tel un sophiste, ne connaît des choses que le système de leurs noms, avec la science « universelle parce que première », dont la poursuite transforme la sagesse en métaphysique ? Bien que composé en Inde, le Veda offre une réponse, se posant en réalité primordiale du seul fait qu’il cultive l’occulte dans la parole. La théorie platonicienne des Idées, en effet, se révélera ici déductible de l’antique hiérarchie articulant langue des hommes et langue des dieux, présente dans le Veda comme chez Homère. Les Mystères d’Éleusis, dont Platon se réclame dès qu’il affirme le caractère stratifié de l’être, confirmeront cette généalogie : faisant de la connaissance une source d’immortalité, ils mettent en scène, dans des rites analogues à ceux des brâhmanes, la quête de l’inspiration propre aux poètes-voyants, laquelle culmine dans l’intuition intellectuelle des noms secrets en usage chez les dieux.les dieux.
