«Come il chicco di grano deve marcire nella terra prima di poter germogliare, così le azioni dei “credenti” devono “marcire” affinché possa germogliare la redenzione». Così scrive Scholem nel saggio che costituisce il cuore di questo volume, «La redenzione attraverso il peccato», sintetizzando, appunto, la dottrina paradossale del «santo peccato» che era stata sviluppata dal sabbatianesimo radicale: al redentore, al più santo fra gli uomini, spetta il compito di immergersi nell’oscurità del male e «riscattare le scintille divine che vi sono ancora imprigionate». Proprio al movimento sabbatiano e alle sue propaggini più radicali Scholem dedica alcuni dei fondamentali saggi contenuti in questo volume, e non con l'atteggiamento di disprezzo e di condanna che aveva caratterizzato fino allora la storiografia ebraica, bensì con profondo interesse, sull'onda di quella «scintilla di emozione» (in questi termini ne aveva scritto all'amico Walter Benjamin) con cui nel 1927, alla Bodleian di Oxford, si era imbattuto in un trattato manoscritto: «Magen Avraham» («Lo scudo di Abramo»), a firma di Avraham Miguel Cardoso, seguace dello pseudo-Messia Shabbetay Tzevi. Senza indietreggiare di fronte allo scandalo della «apoteosi negativa» di Shabbetay Tzevi – la sua conversione all'islam – e dei suoi fedeli (i quali continuarono a credere in lui, convinti che fosse giunta l'ora di un capovolgimento totale e di essere ormai affrancati da ogni comandamento e da ogni proibizione), Scholem riconosce «un elemento autenticamente ebraico nell'anelito di quegli individui paradossali a ricominciare da capo», a «tornare alle sorgenti originarie della fede ebraica»: e lo fa negli stessi anni in cui il suo popolo si avvia verso la catastrofe.
