"Una d'arme, di lingua, d'altare/di memorie, di sangue e di cor". Così, in "Marzo 1821", Alessandro Manzoni inneggiava all'Italia da costruire, dimostrando che quell'Italia, di fatto, già esisteva. Oggi più che mai, in occasione dei centocinquant'anni dell'Unità del nostro Paese, è giusto fermarsi a riflettere sul concetto di nazione che le arti hanno vagheggiato e realizzato ben prima che a dargli concretezza pensassero le vicende risorgimentali. Proprio al "prima", alla nazione-idea, è dedicata la mostra "Alle radici dell'Identità nazionale", che spazia dal sentimento di Italia alla sua immagine esportata all'estero, prima ancora, appunto, che fosse "portata" al suo interno. A essere illustrati, raccontati e celebrati sono i padri spirituali del Paese, la "nazione delle lettere", da Dante, Petrarca e Boccaccio fino a Foscolo, Leopardi e lo stesso Manzoni, ma anche la nazione dei grandi maestri dell'arte, a partire da Michelangelo, Raffaello e Bernini, che attraverso le loro opere, apprezzate e copiate, hanno diffuso l'immagine del Paese all'estero. Su queste basi si innestano poi i programmi ad hoc, dall'estensione dell'istruzione obbligatoria all'accezione del paesaggio come "bene culturale". Ecco allora che la lingua, letteraria ma non solo, diventa arma. È comunicazione e documentazione, pensiero ma, mutuando Mazzini, pure azione. E memoria, come fatto e atto, come tradizione e sua tutela. La storia si mette in mostra a partire da fonti e arti, tra musica, pittura, testi, televisione, cinema e ogni altra forma di espressione, celebrando i suoi nomi illustri, per ricordare chi eravamo e chi siamo, puntare l'attenzione sulle radici per spingere lo sguardo oltre i rami.
