Il mondo gli appare come un immenso enigma, che ora lo riempie di gioiosa e ammirata esultanza, ora invece gli fa avvertire una dolorosa stretta al cuore per lo struggente sentimento di essere l'unico estraneo a quel 'banchetto'"..

Dostoevskij scrisse questo romanzo tra il settembre del 1867 e il gennaio del 1869. Venne dapprima pubblicato a puntate tra il 1868 e il 1869 sul “Ruskij Vestnik” e successivamente in volume a Pietroburgo nel 1874. Il personaggio principale del romanzo è il principe Lev Nikolaevič Myškin, il quale ha potuto recarsi in Svizzera per curare l’epilessia grazie a un benefattore, versando lui stesso, ultimo discendente del suo casato, in pessime condizioni economiche. Tramite la figura del principe l’autore vuole trasmettere a chi legge una sorta di istanza ideale, narrativamente caratterizzata dalla «idiozia» del principe, che consiste in un atteggiamento di assoluta fiducia negli altri; forse la malattia, che gli ha inibito negli anni cruciali per la formazione del carattere una compiuta esperienza di vita, ha contribuito alla costruzione del suo ego in direzione di una pressoché totale ingenuità. Con questo espediente narrativo l’autore esprime la propria aspirazione a tratteggiare una figura umana che possa impersonare positivamente la soluzione del problema etico, così come aveva in mente.

Italians found another way to engage with Shakespeare besides opera. In 1923, Italian intellectual Piero Gobetti wrote that his age would be remembered as a curious chapter in the reception history of Shakespeare, when the Bard got entangled with ideas of criminal anthropology. In fact, the uses of Shakespeare by Lombroso’s school are now forgotten. In the second half of the nineteenth century, Shakespeare began to be portrayed as a genius who anticipated the findings of the Italian Positivist School, or, alternatively, as an authority who could debunk them. Shakespeare’s own psyche and the characters of his plays were explored and pathologised. These studies occasionally percolated into the practices of courthouses, prisons, hospitals, and asylums, and had an impact on the performance of Shakespeare’s plays. This volume provides an edition of hitherto uncollected primary sources which document these uses of Shakespeare. Each text has a parallel English translation, and is introduced by a preface providing details about the context and its main discursive stances. The volume also features a critical introduction and explanatory notes.

È venuto a proclamare la sua verità da “idiota”, che sovverte le tradizionali contrapposizioni tra Bene e Male, tra Amore e Odio e afferma una sua nuova Legge: quella della compassione e dell’accettazione del prossimo. Ma a questa verità tutti si ribellano; a respingerla è soprattutto Nastas’ja Filippovna, donna bellissima e consapevolmente perduta che rifiuta di farsi salvare dal principe e non si sottrae al suo tragico destino, quello di finir vittima del passionale mercante Rogožin. Opera in cui massimamente si trasfondono la visione dostoevskiana del mondo e un profondo sentimento religioso (tanto che nel principe Myškin è stata adombrata la figura di Cristo), L’idiota, definito da Thomas Mann «il romanzo dell’anima», resta tuttora una lettura irrinunciabile e una pietra miliare della letteratura. «Forse anche qui mi considereranno un ragazzino, e sia. C’è anche chi mi crede un idiota, non ho mai scoperto perché. In verità sono stato talmente malato da non essere molto diverso da un idiota; ma com’è possibile che sia idiota anche adesso quando io per primo mi accorgo che la gente mi considera tale? Io entro e penso: “Mi credono idiota, ma io sono intelligente, e loro non lo sospettano nemmeno”.» Fëdor M. Dostoevskij Fëdor Michajlovic Dostoevskij nacque a Mosca nel 1821. Da ragazzo, alla notizia della morte del padre, subì il primo attacco di epilessia, malattia che lo tormentò per tutta la vita. Nel 1849 lo scrittore, a causa delle sue convinzioni socialiste, venne condannato a morte. La pena fu poi commutata in quattro anni di lavori forzati in Siberia e nell’esilio fino al 1859. Morì a San Pietroburgo nel 1881. È forse il più grande narratore russo e uno dei classici di tutti i tempi. Le sue opere e i suoi personaggi, intensi, drammatici, affascinanti, sono attuali e modernissimi. The Idiot is a novel by the 19th-century Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It was first published serially in the journal The Russian Messenger in 1868-9. The title is an ironic reference to the central character of the novel, Prince (Knyaz) Lev Nikolaevich Myshkin, a young man whose goodness and open-hearted simplicity lead many of the more worldly characters he encounters to mistakenly assume that he lacks intelligence and insight. In the character of Prince Myshkin, Dostoevsky set himself the task of depicting "the positively good and beautiful man". The novel examines the consequences of placing such a unique individual at the centre of the conflicts, desires, passions and egoism of worldly society, both for the man himself and for those with whom he becomes involved.
