Since cinema is a composite language, describing a movie is a complex challenge for critics and writers, and greatly differs from the ancient and successful genre of the ekphrasis, the literary description of a visual work of art. Imaginary Films in Literature deals with a specific and significant case within this broad category: the description of imaginary, non-existent movies – a practice that is more widespread than one might expect, especially in North American postmodern fiction. When America began to emerge as a world power at the end of the nineteenth century, Italy was a young nation, recently unified. The technological advances brought about by electricity and the combustion engine were vastly speeding up the capacity of news, ideas, and artefacts to travel internationally. Furthermore, improved literacy and social reforms had produced an Italian working class with increased time, money, and education. At the turn of the century, if Italy's ruling elite continued the tradition of viewing Paris as a model of sophistication and good taste, millions of lowly-educated Italians began to dream of America, and many bought a transatlantic ticket to migrate there. By the 1920s, Italians were encountering America through Hollywood films and, thanks to illustrated magazines, they were mesmerised by the sight of Manhattan's futuristic skyline and by news of American lifestyle. The USA offered a model of modernity which flouted national borders and spoke to all. It could be snubbed, adored, or transformed for one's personal use, but it could not be ignored. Perversely, Italy was by then in the hands of a totalitarian dictatorship, Mussolini's Fascism. What were the effects of the nationalistic policies and campaigns aimed at protecting Italians from this supposedly pernicious foreign influence? What did Mussolini think of America? Why were jazz, American literature, and comics so popular, even as the USA became Italy's political enemy? America in Italian Culture provides a scholarly and captivating narrative of this epochal shift in Italian culture.

Televisione e Web si assomigliano non soltanto perché entrambi dotati di uno schermo. Si assomigliano perché condividono strutture e schemi che governano la loro funzione principale, che è quella di comunicare e di coinvolgere il fruitore, di immergerlo in mondi di appartenenza emotiva, di condurlo allo sviluppo di un pensiero e di un senso comuni. Entrambi sono palcoscenico per l’esibizione, sia pure nello spessore semiotico di un linguaggio multicodico, dell’antico e inveterato protagonismo della parola. Si assomigliano ma anche si contrappongono, da una parte paradigma “verticale” del broadcasting, emittente vs destinatario, dall’altra il costitutivo dialogismo consentito dalle tecnologie dell’interattività. Nell’epoca caratterizzata dalla cosiddetta oralità di ritorno, modelli espressivi e contenutistici tipici della trasmissione orale del sapere riaffiorano con insistenza nello spettacolo quotidiano dei programmi televisivi e nello spazio delle maggiori piattaforme di condivisione e di social networking presenti su Internet. Si assiste così a una sorta di cortocircuito categoriale che identifica la natura ibrida di questi media, in cui la forza della parola viva e istantanea motiva l’espansione di una conoscenza comunitaria, basata su un nuovo ma sempre presente linguaggio sociale.

Codice verbale e codice figurativo sono distinti, ma spesso anche complementari. Parlare di graffiti, illustrazioni e fumetti in rapporto all’italiano è un modo per ripercorrere l’intera storia linguistica nazionale, aperta dal graffito della catacomba di Commodilla a Roma, uno dei più antichi testi in volgare dell’intero mondo romanzo. I saggi che aprono e chiudono il volume sono dedicati alle “scritture esposte” del presente e del passato, affidate non al libro cartaceo, ma ad altri materiali, per una lettura in spazi aperti, spesso pubblici. Si va dall’antico e noto esempio pittorico di una basilica romana a un bassorilievo trecentesco napoletano; da varie scritte umbre medievali e moderne al “visibile parlare” della grande pittura toscana tre-quattrocentesca, che ha in Dante un imprescindibile punto di riferimento; dalle scritte medievali destinate a usi religiosi o magici agli ex voto popolari dei secoli XVI-XIX, fino a forme contemporanee di scritte di carattere effimero, come gli striscioni di protesta, quelli esposti negli stadi, i graffiti metropolitani. Le illustrazioni sono qui rappresentate dai manoscritti di Leonardo, dalle immagini con cui Manzoni corredò l’edizione definitiva dei Promessi sposi, dalle figure contenute in un fascicoletto del 1919, che costituisce una parodia del Vocabolario della Crusca. L’Accademia è presente anche con le sue famose “pale”, contenenti un’immagine, lo pseudonimo dell’accademico e un motto, chiave di lettura dell’immagine e del nome. Quanto ai fumetti, tre saggi documentano come vignettisti, “fumettari” e giornalisti italiani abbiano saputo declinare questa particolare tipologia di immagini a stampa in nuovi generi testuali, che coniugano testo e figura nelle forme più varie. L’Accademia della Crusca è uno dei principali e più antichi punti di riferimento per le ricerche sulla lingua italiana e la sua promozione nel mondo. Sostiene l’attività scientifica e la formazione di ricercatori nel campo della lessicografia e della linguistica; diffonde la conoscenza storica della lingua e la coscienza critica della sua evoluzione; collabora con le istituzioni nazionali ed estere per il plurilinguismo.
