Questo libro è il tentativo, forse «folle e disperato», di raccontare la poesia di John Ford. Per provarci, Alberto Crespi ha inventato un percorso che non è cronologico, né di genere (i western e i non-western). Un percorso tematico partendo da un film: "Ombre rosse", il film dove tutto è cominciato. Il film perfetto, che Orson Welles adottò come manuale vedendolo decine di volte prima di girare "Quarto potere". Crespi ha quindi preso i nove passeggeri della diligenza, e ciascuno di loro è lo spunto per un capitolo: parlando di Ringo/John Wayne si analizza la figura dell’eroe fordiano, parlando di Dallas/Claire Trevor scopriremo che Ford è un regista assai più “femminile” di quanto si creda, e così via. Oltre ai nove passeggeri, in Ombre rosse ci sono altri due protagonisti. Gli indiani, ovviamente; e la Monument Valley, il paesaggio che Ford scopre in quel film e che per molti appassionati è diventato il Far West per antonomasia. Nove personaggi più due: undici capitoli per viaggiare nel mondo di John Ford, e scoprire la sua poesia.
