Per Geoff Dyer la fotografia non è altro che un mezzo attraverso cui avviene il racconto delle piccole e grandi storie dell’umanità. Come la scrittura e il jazz, anche la fotografia sa andare oltre il significato del soggetto dell’opera, ma è necessario affinare la propria sensibilità.Nell’Infinito istante, è una sorta di ordine entropico a guidare il viaggio nelle sterminate possibilità del mezzo fotografico. Dyer prova a distinguere quei fili che, come in un romanzo, legano generazioni di fotografia che pur non essendosi mai incontrati entrano in contatto incuranti del tempo e dello spazio grazie alla ripetizione dell’identico. Raccoglie quindi gli scatti di Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Walker Evans, André Kertész, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus e William Eggleston e scopre come il fotografare le stesse scene e gli stessi oggetti (panchine, cappelli, mani, strade, finestre, negozi di barbieri, fisarmonicisti) crei tra di loro un dialogo costante, una conversazione a più voci. Il suo è lo sguardo di uno scrittore che non possiede una macchina fotogra ca per sua stessa ammissione, e che può quindi abbandonarsi all’esperienza intima e personale dell’immagine.La fotografia cambia il modo in cui vediamo il mondo, Geoff Dyer cambia il modo in cui guardiamo entrambi.

In archaeology, photography is mainly used as a technique for gathering data and evidence. Within the framework of the research project '(in)site, site-specific photography revisited' the relationship between photography and archaeology, or broader, history is explored. How do photographers visualize history? What is the importance of place, particularly the place that remains after the event took place? How do photographers or artists use photography to depict the past, when time has become 'past time'? These articles and portfolios explore, both on practical and theoretical level, how history can be captured. The research project is an attempt to redefine the traditional relationship between archaeology and photography in order to produce new forms of image-making more adapted to contemporary visual culture. The project considers photography as a practice in which a picture is shaped and constructed by the photographer, not a practice in which a picture is mechanically taken.

Il Complesso del Vittoriano, che ha visto negli anni passati lo svolgimento delle prime iniziative in occasione del centocinquantenario dell’Unità d’Italia, ha oggi il privilegio di ospitare il primo atto delle celebrazioni ufficiali legate al centenario della Grande Guerra. Per la costruzione della mostra “La Prima guerra mondiale. 1914-1918. Materiali e Fonti”, alla luce dell’importanza storica, sociale e culturale dell’evento, è stato ritenuto fondamentale avvalersi della partecipazione attiva delle istituzioni di riferimento che con la loro professionalità e grazie ai materiali che custodiscono possono raccontare al meglio l’importanza del primo conflitto mondiale, un momento cruciale, che mutò radicalmente l’aspetto dell’Europa. Sono l’Istituto per la storia del Risorgimento italiano-Museo Centrale del Risorgimento, l’ICCU - Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico, la Biblioteca di Storia Moderna e Contemporanea, la Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze, l’Istituto Centrale per i Beni Sonori e Audiovisivi e Istituto Luce-Cinecittà, unitamente al Ministero degli Affari Esteri, che ha eccezionalmente prestato alcuni materiali di straordinaria importanza documentaria, come l’originale del Trattato della Triplice Alleanza, il Patto di Londra, i Trattati di pace di Versailles con la Germania e di Saint German en Laye con l’Austria, nonché il messaggio di Benedetto XV per la pace. In una cornice così significativa, quale è il Vittoriano, raccontare il centenario vuol dire celebrare i valori che la guerra ha portato con sé, non solo come spartiacque tra l’Ottocento e il Novecento, ma come momento in cui storicamente si possono leggere i valori fondanti dell’unità tra popoli. In questa mostra raccontiamo tutto questo. La svolta culturale – attraverso dipinti, libri d’artista ed edizioni storiche dei capisaldi della letteratura dell’epoca – e la rivoluzione del linguaggio, che ci permette oggi di raccontare da dentro vicende che solo un secolo fa cambiarono il corso della Storia. La struttura di questa esposizione è in linea con la nostra impostazione metodologica che vuole accostare documenti originali a modalità multimediali che consentono di rendere accessibili e vivi immagini e scritti, rendendo la memoria storica fruibile e alla portata di tutti. L’auspicio è che la mostra dopo Roma prosegua in itineranza dando vita a una serie di mostre autonome, con l’esposizione di materiali mirati, per coinvolgere le regioni italiane che, lontane dal fronte, furono comunque naturalmente implicate nel conflitto: dai campi di prigionia agli ospedali militari, dalle industrie belliche allo spopolamento delle campagne. Attraverso contenuti locali, come i ritratti degli uomini e le immagini del conflitto regione per regione, città per città, racconteremo i contrasti e le molteplici facce della Grande Guerra.
