Incorporé comme infirmier au Service de santé des armées, il passera deux années à l'infirmerie du GCCA (Groupement des Commandos de Chasse de l'Akfadou), située au sommet du massif de l'Akfadou, en Grande Kabylie, de 1959 à 1962. Ce livre constitue l'un des tout premiers témoignages d'un appelé du contingent objecteur de conscience durant la guerre d'Algérie, à une époque où le statut d'objecteur n'existait pas encore en France (il ne sera officiellement reconnu par la Loi qu'en 1963).
