Ed è la consapevolezza dell’arbitrarietà o della parzialità delle rappresentazioni che il discorso occidentale, anche quello antropologico, ha prodotto quando ha cercato di descrivere l’Altro. Decostruire la logica e i fondamenti della «invenzione dell’altro»; esplicitare la storicità delle condizioni di produzione della conoscenza antropologica (i rapporti di dominio, l’appartenenza dell’antropologo a una cultura dominante); sottoporre a critica nozioni-cardine come sapere e credenza, alterità e identità, uguaglianza e gerarchia, tradizione e modernità: sono i presupposti per ricostruire un’antropologia che si sottragga sia alle trappole del relativismo, sia al solipsismo dell’antropologia «postmodernista». Attraverso il resoconto delle ricerche in Papua-Nuova Guinea, nelle oasi del Sud tunisino, nelle Alpi del Vallese, in Svizzera, negli spazi urbani dell’immigrazione maghrebina in Francia, Kilani mostra come sia possibile una «invenzione dell’altro» più consapevole della problematicità del rapporto soggetto-oggetto e dunque meno etnocentrica.

Con il termine arabo “sahel” – letteralmente “bordo del deserto” – s’intende quella fascia di territorio africano che attraversa orizzontalmente tutto il continente, fungendo da area di passaggio tra l’arido deserto del Sahara a Nord e la fertile savana arborata a Sud. Secondo Jean-Loup Amselle, tra i massimi antropologi contemporanei, a questa categoria geografica è stata associata una questione socio-culturale e politica del tutto arbitraria: il Sahel non esiste e nasce esclusivamente all’interno del contesto coloniale francese. Un tempo il territorio era attraversato dagli imperi Ghana, Mali e Songhai, che mettevano in comunicazione l’Africa subsahariana con le coste del Mediterraneo. Sulle rotte commerciali di Timbuctù, Djenné e Kong viaggiavano le carovane che trasportavano l’oro in Europa e gli schiavi in direzione del mondo arabo-musulmano. A questo asse Nord-Sud, con la colonizzazione francese del continente africano, se ne sovrappose un altro da Oriente a Occidente. Secondo Jean-Loup Amselle, è proprio a questa cesura storica, politica e culturale che vanno imputati i problemi che interessano oggi il Sahel e tutto il continente africano.

I saggi che compongono il primo volume di Psyché. Invenzioni dell’altro sono stati ordinati da Jacques Derrida proprio a partire dall’idea che l’altro, in qualunque modo irrompa o si annunci, è sempre occasione di un incontro in cui pensieri, domande e sollecitazioni si ritrovano nell’unità di un’esigenza fondante e, nello stesso tempo, ambigua: giocare fino in fondo e senza protezioni la questione della verità. Una verità sempre inseguita e interrogata attraverso conferenze, studi, missive in cui mittente e destinatario scoprono – non senza difficoltà – di parlare una lingua che li supera entrambi, conducendoli altrove rispetto a progetti e attese: si tratti di Roland Barthes o di Lévinas, di psicoanalisi o di metafora, di impossibile definizione di «decostruzione» o di Platone, Derrida «prende la parola» nel senso letterale dell’espressione (vale a dire arrischiando la responsabilità verso l’altro a cui si parla) e lascia che essa parli al di là di intenzioni o desideri. I saggi qui riuniti sono dunque molto più che una semplice raccolta: in essi – scrive Derrida – si viene tratteggiando una «teoria discontinua» in cui i testi si richiamano e si corrispondono a partire dai «nomi propri» che ne innervano il procedere.
