Il volume si apre con il ricordo di Gian Paolo Treccani, studioso importante, architetto restauratore e storico dell’architettura contemporanea e degli interventi di musealizzazione archeologica, membro della redazione della rivista e assai attivo nel gruppo che l’ha fondata nel 1996 collegando tra loro le discipline di “Restauro architettonico” e “Archeologia dell’architettura”. E al periodo in cui queste due discipline coincidevano (nella conoscenza delle architetture medievali e nella progettazione di edifici che le imitavano) è dedicato il monografico dal titolo “Medioevo fantastico. L’invenzione di uno stile nell’architettura tra fine ’800 e inizio ’900”. Il tema è trattato da due archeologi e cinque storici dell’architettura che ne analizzano le origini e lo sviluppo in alcune città (Padova, Verona, Milano, Siena e Napoli) e in relazione ai personaggi che ne furono i protagonisti (Pietro Selvatico, Camillo Boito, Luca Beltrami, Alfredo d’Andrade oltre ad altri meno noti). Nella sezione “Casi studio” vengono infine pubblicati quattro lavori (relativi alla topografia della via Latina e al complesso del Palatino a Roma, alla torre di Oyace in Val d’Aosta, e alla mensiocronologia di Rimini) che spaziano tra le architetture romane e medievale, a confermare quell’apertura cronologica che la rivista ha ultimamente adottato.

Architect Ernesto Nathan Rogers (1909-1969) was a towering figure in 20th-century Italian architecture, with a significant impact at the international level. Through the work of his collaborative firm (Banfi Belgiojoso Peressutti Rogers, or BBPR), the editorship of publications such as Domus and Casabella, and his teaching at the Politecnico in Milan, Rogers ensured a lasting influence on the field as a practitioner, theorist and educator. However his contributions have been largely neglected by scholarship outside of Italy. Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, this book re-assesses Ernesto Nathan Rogers' cultural legacy. This book seeks to provide an alternative post-Western perspective to the history of contemporary architecture. It puts forward detailed critical analyses of various areas of the world, including Europe, Latin America, Africa, China, Australia, India and Japan, where particular movements of architecture have developed as active ‘political acts’. The authors focus on a broad spectrum of countries, architectures and architects that have developed a design approach closely linked to the building context. The concept of context is broad and includes various economic, social, cultural, political and natural aspects. In all cases, the architects selected in this book have chosen to view context as an opportunity. However, each architect has considered certain specific aspects of context: some have been very attentive to the social context, others to material aspects or typological issues, and still others to aspects related to political visions or economic factors. «La ricerca lavora sugli strati profondi del Museo Hedmark di Hamar che incarna in modo paradigmatico il procedimento di messa in relazione del tempo passato con il tempo presente e futuro», così scrive Eleonora Mantese nella prefazione. Tra i progetti più significativi di Sverre Fehn (Kongsberg, 1924-Oslo, 2009), il museo di Hamar è sintesi di un preciso principio compositivo che si traduce nel dare forma costruita alle idee fondanti della sua architettura, il rapporto con la storia, l’attacco a terra, la copertura. Qui il maestro norvegese opera mediante un atto di “ricostruzione tendenziosa”, cercando di dare senso alle tracce disseminate dal processo di metamorfosi della storia senza però riproporre lo stato originale del manufatto. Lo fa costruendo un percorso sospeso che si inserisce all’interno del vecchio edificio, trasformandolo. La narrazione dell’antico edificio viene risignificata dall’astrazione del nuovo linguaggio che rifugge la ricostruzione/riparazione per fare del nuovo e dell’antico un ensemble compiuto. Attingendo agli schizzi e ai disegni prodotti da Fehn lungo l’arco della sua carriera, il libro indaga le diverse parti di cui si compone l’opera recuperando quel mondo di riferimenti e quella cosmogonia di simboli che è all’origine del modo di pensare dell’architetto norvegese.
