This book investigates the relationship between the ideas of nation and race among the nationalist intelligentsia of the Italian Risorgimento and argues that ideas of race played a considerable role in defining Italian national identity. The author argues that the racialization of the Italians dates back to the early Napoleonic age and that naturalistic racialism—or race-thinking based on the taxonomies of the natural history of man—emerged well before the traditionally presumed date of the late 1860s and the advent of positivist anthropology. On October 1922 Mussolini became head of the Italian government, a situation that would last for twenty years. That power was obtained was largely due to the widespread violence perpetrated by blackshirts throughout Italy (squadristi). Violence however did not end. Old and new blackshirts played a major role in making Italy a fascist country. Contrary to the claims of many scholars that have depicted blackshirts after the March on Rome only as troublemakers for Mussolini, the book shows that they played a crucial role in establishing a full and totalitarian dictatorship. Squadristi carried out processes of fascistisation, crushed opponents and convinced bystanders and dubious people, consolidating fascist power in many aspects of social, political and even intimate life. By resorting to new archives, a long chronology and a focus on individual perspectives, this book gives voice to the perpetrators of fascist violence and offers new insights into the lives of squadristi throughout the dictatorship, outlining their beliefs, outlooks and expectations. The book shows that post-1922 squadrismo was not a side effect of Fascism's twenty-year history. On the contrary, violence represents one of the essential components of any definition of Italian Fascism.

Presentando questa sua opera, Croce scrisse, con estrema sobrietà, che si trattava dello «schizzo di una storia dell’Italia dopo la conseguita unità di stato», concepito come «tentativo di esporre gli avvenimenti nel loro nesso oggettivo e riportandoli alle loro fonti interiori». Ma, di fatto, scoprire il «nesso oggettivo» in quei «quarantacinque anni, di quelli che si chiamano “di pace”», fra il 1871 e il 1915 implicava di coglierne anche la relazione con gli anni del Risorgimento e di proiettare la storia italiana sulla scena dell’Europa moderna. Cosicché, proprio perché coinvolge l’identità stessa della nazione italiana, questa «Storia d’Italia» è diventata forse la più discussa fra le grandi opere storiche di Croce, quella che ha avuto la più lunga e la più vasta influenza sulla visione che generazioni di italiani si sono formati della propria storia. Ma occorre anche dire che Croce, in questo libro, mostra con il massimo vigore le sue qualità di storico-narratore, intrecciando ai conflitti delle idee quelli tra le forze politiche e sociali nonché quelli tra le varie personalità politiche dell’epoca. Sono pagine che ci offrono un quadro imprescindibile di come si sviluppò il nostro paese sino alla cesura drammatica della prima guerra mondiale. E la raffigurazione narrativa di questa Italia fine Ottocento e primo Novecento apparirà tuttora molto più efficace di quelle che la letteratura italiana del tempo invano tentò di dare. «Storia d’Italia dal 1871 al 1915» fu pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1928.
