Partindo desse movimento, a persona curiosa do leitor é quem ganha. Plantation Memories is a compilation of episodes of everyday racism written in the form of short psychoanalytical stories. From the question “Where do you come from?” to Hair Politics to the N-word, the book is a strong, eloquent, and elaborate piece that deconstructs the normality of everyday racism and exposes the violence of being placed as the Other. Released at the Berlin International Literature Festival in 2008, soon the book became internationally acclaimed and part of numerous academic curricula. Known for her subversive practice of giving body, voice, and image to her own texts, Grada Kilomba has adapted her book into a staged reading and video installation. Plantation Memories is an important contribution to the global cultural discourse.

Educating Citizens In A Multicultural Society written by James A. Banks and has been published by Teachers College Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-08-30 with Education categories.

In this second edition of Educating Citizens in a Multicultural Society— which includes three new chapters—Banks argues that an effective citizenship education helps students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and values needed to function effectively within their cultural communities, nation states, regions, and the global community. It also helps students to acquire cosmopolitan perspectives and values needed to attain equality and social justice for people around the world. In the new chapters, Banks draws heavily upon his recent work which focuses on how students in multicultural nations around the world can be educated in ways that will help them to develop the knowledge, attitudes, and values needed to make decisions and to take action to create a more just and humane world. Praise for the First Edition “James Banks captures for us an essential element of American citizenship—diversity. This volume is a tribute to the triumphs, challenges, and sometimes tragedies of citizenship in a democratic and multicultural society. This is must reading for the student of U.S. history, civics, and the political process.” —Gloria Ladson-Billings University of Wisconsin—Madison “The 11 essays that comprise the book provide a comprehensive blending of Banks’s work in multicultural education and citizenship education. This is an outstanding book, one that is worthwhile reading for all students, educators, and those interested in the political process.” —Laurel Garrick Duhaney State University of New York, College at New Paltz Review in MultiCultural Review “Educating Citizens in a Multicultural Society will provide both the novice and the expert with an instructive perspective for considering multicultural education. By shifting the lens to citizenship, a lively topic in academic circles right now, Banks once again demonstrates his intellectual leadership in this field.” —Margaret Smith Crocco Teachers College, Columbia University Review in Multicultural Education

Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the nineteenth century had the largest population of urban slaves in the Americas—primary contributors to the atmosphere and vitality of the city. Although most urban historians have ignored these inhabitants of Rio, Mary Karasch's generously illustrated study provides a comprehensive description and analysis of the city's rich Afro-Cariocan culture, including its folklore, its songs, and accounts of its oral history. Professor Karasch's investigation of the origins of Rio's slaves demonstrates the importance of the "Central Africaness" of the slave population to an understanding of its culture. Challenging the thesis of the comparative mildness of the Brazilian slave system, other chapters discuss the marketing of Africans in the Valongo, the principal slave market, and the causes of early slave mortality, including the single greatest killer, tuberculosis. Also examined in detail are adaptation and resistance to slavery, occupations and roles of slaves in an urban economy, and art, religion, and associational life. Mary C. Karasch is Associate Professor of History at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Originally published in 1987. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
