Celui-ci est toujours, en derniere analyse, un etre individuel, non predicable (1); mais il peut etre connu dans ce qu'il est au moyen du predicat qu'on juge lui convenir: dans le jugement, on rattache le predicat au sujet precisement par le verbe etre. Le sujet donc, qui n'est ni abstrait ni predicable, peut ainsi etre range sous l'extension d'un predicat abstrait ou de plusieurs, selon qu'on fait a son endroit un ou plusieurs jugemenls. Relever tous les predicats attribuables a un sujet serait dresser d'avance la nomenclature de tout ce qui peut etre affirme d'un objet donne, et partant le tableau de tous les objets eux-memes. Ce serait preparer a ceux qui doivent jamais juger les cadres complets de leurs jugements: oeuvre evidemment impossible et oiseuse. Mais ce qu'Aristote a cru pouvoir tenter au moins, c'est de relever les dix genres supremes de toutes les notions universelles, divisant l'etre en deux genres tout d'abord, substance et accident, et ce dernier ensuite en neuf autres. Ces categories sont donc le tableau de tous les etres ou de toutes les notions essentielles, obtenu par la classification des predicats les plus generaux. Elles constituent le tableau primordial de tous les jugements possibles consideres dans leur contenu objectif. Il y a donc a la fois quelque chose de logique et de reel dans les categories...
