Nel metro tradizionale dell’epos il poeta dell’Odissea, narrando l’antica storia del ritorno e della vendetta di Odisseo, apre al nostro sguardo un mondo nuovo, e crea l’idea germinale del romanzo. Nell’intreccio delle avventure, vissute sul filo del ricordo o nel vortice dell’azione, il protagonista è tutto. Distruttore di Troia, audace e paziente, astuto e vendicativo, ora egli vuole una cosa sola, rivedere l’isola natale e riconquistare il mondo dei suoi affetti, al centro dei quali sono Penelope e Telemaco, la donna e il figlio degni di lui. Questo libro interpreta l’Odissea come una grande opera d’arte che, attraverso un lungo processo compositivo, ha raggiunto nella forma finale una spiccata originalità rispetto all’Iliade. Ciascun canto è studiato in tre momenti: lettura, analisi, critica. Il testo è tradotto quasi integralmente in forma chiara e moderna, e commentato sulla base di una ricognizione a vasto raggio della filologia omerica degli ultimi due secoli. Con Odisseo entra nella poesia dell’Occidente la figura di «un uomo nuovo», originale e paradigmatica nello stesso tempo; entra anche per la prima volta la vita affettiva degli esclusi, soprattutto della donna, ispiratrice dell’azione e della nostalgia. Antiche passioni rivivono ad una lettura che, interpretando il testo arcaico, cerca il segreto della poesia.

Il suo multiforme ingegno scaturisce dalla necessità di difendersi dai colpi della storia. La sua è una vicenda di resistenza, che culmina nei dieci anni necessari per tornare a casa, dopo i dieci trascorsi a combattere una guerra non sua: a quanti è accaduto qualcosa di simile? E quanto abbiamo sofferto, quanti compagni abbiamo perduto, quante volte abbiamo fatto naufragio, prima di capire che l'unica cura per l'invincibile nostalgia di futuro che ci affliggeva era tornare nella nostra Itaca, non quella del passato ma quella ancora da fare rimanendo fedeli al nostro destino? Alessandro D'Avenia ripercorre i ventiquattro canti del poema come un'arte di vivere, e lo fa risplendere di tutta la sua luce. Ci accompagna attraverso l'opera come studioso di Lettere classiche che l'ha eletta a suo principale ambito d'interesse, come insegnante che da anni ne promuove la lettura integrale ad alta voce, come intellettuale abilissimo nell'interpretare lo spirito del tempo.
