Quante volte abbiamo letto e usato questa espressione, come una frase fatta, uno stereotipo icastico, senza comprenderne appieno la bellezza, intesa come verità, ed il suo peso ponderale. Forse, come mai nel passato, in questi tempi di oggi in cui Panta rei, tutto scivola via nel succedersi incalzante degli eventi consumati in un momento, c'è bisogno di fermarsi a riflettere per riappropriarci della Storia.L'occasione ci viene offerta da questa IV Giornata per l'Archeologia, per la quale, la Direzione Generale per i Beni Archeologici ha scelto di affrontare il tema delle radici di quell'area centro italica, così densa di vitalità e di eventi che portarono alla nascita di Roma ed alla sua sempre più crescente potenza.Il caleidoscopio di popolazioni preromane dell'Italia Centrale viene, quindi, declinato, attraverso lo scandaglio delle fonti storiche e documentali, dalle fasi protostoriche fino alla romanizzazione. Dalle modalità e ritualità sepolcrali e dai ricchi corredi tombali, ma anche dai resti degli insediamenti abitativi e culturali, la società, la vita, la cultura e la religione di Equi, Vestini, Pretuzi, Sabini, Umbri ed Etruschi riaffiora al presente.Questo Convegno non è che il punto di partenza e l'iniziale spunto per una trattazione più ampia e diffusa che, nel prossimo 2006, la Direzione Generale intende predisporre e ricondurre al tema unitario: Così nacque l'Italia. Alla manifestazione attuale fa da degna cornice la bella mostra sugli Equi, la prima mostra in Italia su questa popolazione, proveniente da Oricola, nel suo riallestimento nel Salone degli Arazzi del Complesso Monumentale del S. Michele, premessa scientifica della più ampia trattazione che interesserà tutto il territorio del Paese nel prossimo anno.Le testimonianze archeologiche, di quel Museo diffuso che è l'Italia, verranno così, a dire a ciascuno di noi chi siamo stati e chi siamo ed a parlarci della nostra storia. Although there are many studies of certain individual ancient Italic groups (e.g. the Etruscans, Gauls and Latins), there is no work that takes a comprehensive view of each of them—the famous and the less well-known—that existed in Iron Age and Roman Italy. Moreover, many previous studies have focused only on the material evidence for these groups or on what the literary sources have to say about them. This handbook is conceived of as a resource for archaeologists, historians, philologists and other scholars interested in finding out more about Italic groups from the earliest period they are detectable (early Iron Age, in most instances), down to the time when they begin to assimilate into the Roman state (in the late Republican or early Imperial period). As such, it will endeavor to include both archaeological and historical perspectives on each group, with contributions from the best-known or up-and-coming archaeologists and historians for these peoples and topics. The language of the volume is English, but scholars from around the world have contributed to it. This volume covers the ancient peoples of Italy more comprehensively in individual chapters, and it is also distinct because it has a thematic section.
