Goro Kida è il presidente di una grande e rinomata impresa a Nagoya, in Giappone. Peccato che il suo scintillante mondo si regga solo sull’ipocrisia e, d’improvviso, si sgretoli per precipitare rovinosamente. Alla prima bruciante delusione per mano di un’amante, divenuta un’attrice famosa, seguono presto altre umiliazioni che travolgono il cinquantenne Goro nella vita professionale e sentimentale. La solitudine in cui piomba gli offrirà l’occasione per ripensare alla sua vita, alla sua infanzia triste ed emotivamente arida, e all’unica persona che aveva compreso che sotto l’arroganza, la frivolezza e l’egocentrismo si nascondeva una profonda fragilità: tutte caratteristiche che trovano piena espressione nel fiore del suisen, il narciso – che dà il titolo al romanzo – e che, a sua volta, rievoca il mito greco rispecchiando perfettamente l’indole e il destino di Goro. In un’armonica tessitura di rimandi e corrispondenze, il romanzo scava nelle ferite mai rimarginate dell’infanzia che accompagnano l’individuo fino nella vita adulta. Gli eventi segnano un percorso di introspezione che, catartica e poetica, riporta il personaggio nelle innevate Kanazawa e Maibura, città note al lettore che ha già assaporato le vibranti pagine di Azami e Hozuki, e conosciuto Goro Kida, protagonista complesso e dal passato torbido, di cui Aki Shimazaki traccia il profilo psicologico e sociologico, senza mai commentare né giudicare, ma raccontando con il suo consueto lucido e garbato distacco.

In molti, sorpresi dalla scomparsa di Mitsuko, le rendono omaggio: i clienti della sua rinomata libreria, ma anche quelli del locale che lei frequentava come entraîneuse, un lato oscuro della vita della madre che Tarō ignorava. A poco a poco dal passato emergono altri aspetti misteriosi e nascosti con cui Tarō ora deve confrontarsi. Al tempo stesso, inaspettata ricompare un’amica di infanzia, la delicata e affascinante Hanako. La brevità del loro rapporto d’amicizia da bambini e la lontananza fisica non sembrano aver scalfito l’autentico sentimento che spontaneamente li aveva uniti tanti anni fa e che adesso assume profondità e sensualità. La felicità pare così vicina, ma non altrettanto scontata. Aki Shimazaki affronta il tema della perdita, della diversità fisica, dell’abbandono e dell’amore travolgente e incondizionato con la sua scrittura essenziale e sempre misurata, evocativa come i meravigliosi spettacoli della natura che accompagnano la narrazione delle vicende umane.

Historian Eric R Dursteler reconsiders identity in the early modern world to illuminate Veneto-Ottoman cultural interaction and coexistence, challenging the model of hostile relations and suggesting instead a more complex understanding of the intersection of cultures. Although dissonance and strife were certainly part of this relationship, he argues, coexistence and cooperation were more common. Moving beyond the "clash of civilizations" model that surveys the relationship between Islam and Christianity from a geopolitical perch, Dursteler analyzes the lived reality by focusing on a localized microcosm: the Venetian merchant and diplomatic community in Muslim Constantinople. While factors such as religion, culture, and political status could be integral elements in constructions of self and community, Dursteler finds early modern identity to be more than the sum total of its constitutent parts and reveals how the fluidity and malleability of identity in this time and place made coexistence among disparate cultures possible.

E così il Cardo deve vedersela da solo, vagando come ubriaco sui tetti di San Salvario, in una Torino piovigginosa, contro un nemico che non gli risparmia assalti a colpi di taekwondo. E nemmeno Angela può aiutarlo, impegnata a risvegliare i ricordi erotici di Piero, un clochard che si aggiunge alla serie degli sgangherati amici del Cardo. Ma su tutto il romanzo, condotto su due piani da un irresistibile Cardo e da una lucida voce che esplora i confini della vita, aleggia il segno di una domanda forte la cui risposta spetta soltanto al lettore.
