La journée d’études, qui est à l’origine de cette publication, a été centrée sur les problèmes engendrés par le patrimoine et ses rapports avec le monde et avec le public actuels. Ne pouvant prendre en compte toutes les formes du patrimoine, elle en a abordé trois aspects principaux particulièrement représentatifs de la Normandie : le patrimoine industriel, le patrimoine urbain et le patrimoine archéologique qui, tous trois, posent des problèmes qui leur sont spécifiques. Parmi les questions posées, elle a tenté de définir comment préserver ces trois types de patrimoine, de préciser ce qu’il convient de conserver et avec quel objectif, de proposer des modalités de mise en valeur et de présentation au public. L'étude du patrimoine industriel est née, dans le courant du 20e siècle, comme une « archéologie » ayant comme objectifs premiers la mise en place de l'inventaire et la sauvegarde matérielle ou documentaire du patrimoine bâti et technologique. Cette vocation de sauvegarde des friches industrielles et des machines n'a cessé d'évoluer vers une approche de plus en plus intégrale des paysages, des cadres de vie, des objets, du patrimoine iconographique, et même de l'imaginaire des sociétés industrielles. Cette perspective est nécessairement liée à l'histoire économique, qui explique comment sont produits les éléments considérés maintenant comme un héritage. Le Languedoc Roussillon, au riche passé industriel, dispose sans aucun doute possible d'un patrimoine industriel et technique qui mérite d'être mieux connu. Pour cela, il apparaît naturel d'intégrer la région dans l'espace dans lequel elle s'insère : la méditerranée occidentale. La mise en perspective par rapport au Principat catalan est logique : cet espace voisin dispose d'un savoir faire très avancé dans l'histoire économique et dans la mise en valeur d'un patrimoine industriel de premier ordre. Cet ouvrage se propose de faire le point sur quelques éléments d'histoire de la société industrielle, mais aussi sur des stratégies de conservation et de mise en valeur (muséographie et tourisme industriel). Il aborde les paysages de la société industrielle et évoque quelques projets de valorisation de ce patrimoine dans la région.

In studying the past, archaeologists have focused on the material remains of our ancestors.
