Questo libro racconta la storia matematica di un enigma secolare. Nel 1637 il matematico francese Pierre de Fermat enunciò, senza fornire la dimostrazione, che se x, y e z sono numeri interi, è impossibile che si abbia xn + yn = zn , con l’esponente n superiore a due. Sembra così semplice, ma in realtà tale proposizione è stata per secoli il rompicapo dei più grandi matematici di tutto il mondo, senza che nessuno di essi riuscisse a darne una dimostrazione generale. In questa sfida ossessiva si cimentarono i più grandi nomi della matematica: Eulero, Dirichlet, Cauchy, Legendre, Kummer, solo per citarne alcuni, ma senza alcun successo. Partendo dalle sue radici nell’antica Grecia, in questo libro viene ripercorsa, con pari intensità storica e matematica, l’intera parabola fermatiana. Si inizia, nel primo capitolo, con la biografia dettagliata dell’uomo e del matematico Fermat, illustrando anche le sue fondamentali scoperte scientifiche. Si continua, nel secondo e terzo capitolo, con l’esposizione di concetti e nozioni propedeutici alle teorie matematiche dei capitoli successivi. Nella seconda parte del libro (capitolo IV e V), che costituisce l’ossatura portante dell’opera, viene descritta l’intera storia matematica dell’Ultimo Teorema di Fermat, dalla sua genesi racchiusa nell’aritmetica greca fino alla sua formulazione nel 1637, dai primi tentativi di dimostrarne la veridicità fino a tutte le tentate prove dei tre secoli successivi, dalla sua riformulazione geometrica di inizio novecento fino alla dimostrazione, ancorché indiretta, di Andrew Wiles di fine novecento.

Ho voluto ragionare attingendo al modus operandi di Pitagora, ma con quella conoscenza della matematica che poteva avere Fermat nel XVII secolo. La soluzione, data nel 1995, da quel genio della matematica che risponde al nome di Andrew Wiles, argomentata in centotrenta pagine di una matematica davvero a pochi comprensibile, non mi sembra compatibile con le affermazioni di Fermat.
