Nel volume è delineato il profilo storico dell’Università degli studi della Basilicata, dal primo progetto di legge, presentato in Senato, nel 1969, alla concretizzazione della sua istituzione, nell’ambito della legge 219/1981 sulla ricostruzione delle aree colpite dal tragico terremoto del 1980, all’avvio e sviluppo delle sue attività scientifiche e didattiche, dall’inaugurazione del primo anno accademico, 1983-84, a quello del 2019-20. E ciò accompagnando, per ogni capitolo, la parte discorsiva con una mirata appendice documentaria, nell’obiettivo di meglio far cogliere il progressivo ed articolato sviluppo dell’Ateneo, insieme con la portata e l’incidenza di ruoli e funzioni esercitati a livello di interrelazioni istituzionali e sul territorio. Un percorso, quello seguito, dal quale ben emergono connotazioni portanti del profilo storico di un Ateneo, quale quello della Basilicata, che, pur tra non pochi, iniziali, precondizionamenti strutturali e di servizi e progressive restrizioni finanziarie statali, è riuscito non solo a salvaguardare ed a tenere alti i livelli della sua attività scientifica e dell’offerta didattica, ma a svolgere e sviluppare un sempre più attivo e diffuso ruolo nel quadro del sistema universitario italiano ed internazionale.

This book is focused on the challenges to implement sustainability in diverse contexts such as agribusiness, natural resource systems and new technologies. The experiences made by the researchers of the School of Agricultural, Forestry, Food and Environmental Science (SAFE) of the University of Basilicata offer a wide and multidisciplinary approach to the identification and testing of different solutions tailored to the economic, social and environmental characteristics of the region and the surrounding areas. Basilicata’s productive system is mainly based on activities related to the agricultural sector and exploitation of natural resources but it has seen, in recent years, an industrial development driven by the discovery of oil fields. SAFE research took up the challenge posed by market competition to create value through the sustainable use of renewable and non-renewable resources of the territory. Moreover, due to its unique geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean basin, Basilicata is an excellent “open sky” laboratory for testing sustainable solutions adaptable to other Mediterranean areas.
