Che cosa accadde ai professori espulsi con le leggi razziali del 1938? E ai più numerosi e meno noti studiosi non strutturati che furono sospesi dal servizio? Che cosa fecero gli studenti cui venne negata l’iscrizione all’università o i neolaureati senza più prospettive per il loro futuro? Gli archivi universitari nulla ci dicono in proposito ; quel che si voleva era che gli studiosi e gli studenti dichiarati di ‘razza ebraica’ fossero cancellati e dimenticati. Non pochi decisero di lasciare l’Italia. Quali furono i loro percorsi e le reti di aiuto? Come vennero trattati all’estero? Quanto soffrì la cultura italiana di quelle perdite? Nel dopoguerra, l’università cercò di recuperarle? Gli espatriati che fossero tornati avrebbero potuto portare nuove conoscenze e idee, ma molti non rientrarono. Perché? Focalizzandosi sul caso rilevante di Firenze, si indaga il minimizzato fenomeno dell’emigrazione intellettuale per motivi politici e razziali. Un recente passato su cui occorre sapere e riflettere.

Il volume ripercorre gli anni salienti dell’attività dell’Istituto di Fisica di Arcetri, in occasione del centenario dell’inaugurazione. Il periodo prescelto, che permette di ricostruire la nascita di alcuni gruppi di ricerca presenti tuttora nel Dipartimento, va dall’arrivo di Garbasso nel 1913 alla fine degli anni Sessanta. Il testo contiene una prima parte sulla storia dell’Istituto di Fisica negli anni appena citati, cui segue una seconda parte in cui vengono delineate le schede biografiche di alcuni dei protagonisti. Nell’ultima parte viene riportato un indice dei titolari dei corsi di Fisica e di Astronomia, a Firenze, dal 1876 al 1969, risultato del lavoro di ricerca condotto presso l’Archivio Storico dell’Università di Firenze.

Le Biblioteche dell’Ateneo fiorentino, erede dell’Istituto, hanno inteso valorizzare le prime donne laureate (1875-1940) e le loro storie catalogando, digitalizzando e pubblicando in rete le loro tesi. Le più antiche o significative, corredate da materiale d’archivio, foto e pubblicazioni, sono state oggetto di una mostra presso la Biblioteca Umanistica. Il volume illustra questa esposizione insieme agli esiti dell’esame condotto sulla documentazione originale, consentendo di definire le peculiarità della realtà fiorentina, offrire spunti per indagini ulteriori, dare visibilità a donne che hanno avuto un ruolo nella cultura italiana, ma di cui è stata perduta la memoria.

Fascism and the racial laws of 1938 dramatically changed the scientific research and the academic community. Guarnieri focuses on psychology, from its promising origins to the end of the WWII. Psychology was marginalized in Italy both by the neo-idealistic reaction against science, and fascism (unlike Nazism) with long- lasting consequences. Academics and young scholars were persecuted because they were antifascist or Jews and the story of Italian displaced scholars is still an embarrassing one. The book follows scholars who emigrated to the United States, such as psychologist Renata Calabresi, and to Palestine, such as Enzo Bonaventura. Guarnieri traces their journey and the help they received from antifascist and Zionist networks and by international organizations. Some succeeded, some did not, and very few went back.
